ILS approaches without lighting ?
Hi guys,
I wonder how important is the approach lighting system of the ILS. ICAO Annex 14 is very clear on that: 900 m of lights for CAT-I. However, do you know if there are there airports with ILS (LOC and GS) but without the 900 m of MI/HI lights before the THR? I would appreciate whether you can provide me examples... I guess that FAA guys allow ILS without lighting but increasing the RVR, aren't they? I think something similiar they do for LPV... I do not know any airport in Europe... any clue?? Thanks for you help! |

Have a look at any airport with the ends pointing out to sea.
Without checking Cardiff Sumburgh there will be a few in norway as well. |
KOAK has lights. There are lights to 14 at KBOS but no ILS. However, 27 there has an ILS but no lights. Mins run 450/1+1/2

Southampton has less than 900m HIAL and the ILS is 'uncategorised'.

A full ILS has lights as a component
but in the US if the ''lights'' are out of service, the ILS may be used with higher minimums.
the lads talking about Boston are quite right about 27...was based there for awhile. the real out of the world situation is to be landing at a field with pilot controlled lighting, right down to minimums and to find the lights didn't work when you get to DH |
A number of UK airports with ILS have less than 900m approach lights due local topography.
Operators take this into account when calculating minima for approach |
I guess they've renumbered 14 in BOS to 15. In going there 13 years I've shot the ILS to 14/15 once. A howling Nor'easter make the 4s/22s unusable.

Take a look at KHPN, White Plains, NY. The ILS16 has lights an an 1800 ft vis minimum but the ILS34 does not have lead-in lights and has a much greater vis min, as expected...6000 feet.
