Getting an airport job by poking around the airport possible?

Hi guys, I would love to work around airplanes - be it cleaning, maintenance, baggage handling... I don't care. Here in Glasgow it seems almost impossible to find any airport vacancies using the normal job websites.

Is it a good idea to just go poking around the airport and asking if any jobs are available instead of sitting emailing the odd application? Just curious if this method works?

Thanks

Best option would be to try and find / make some contacts with people who already work with companies at the airport.

Failing that, print off a load of CV's / covering letters, do your research on companies at the aircraft and if possible hand deliver them to their HR departments or mail them

Your probably too late for a job at glasgow this summer.

Next summer drop your cv into the ground handling agents.

If you really want a job in the airpoirt then you can do a college course at James Watt college at either Greenock or Kilwinning campus that will guarantee you an interview with servisair, although this is primarily a route to a check in job. Think it costs £200.

I applied for a check in job 2 years ago, however went straight to dispatch and have since gained a TRC/TCO license for British Airways & Virgin Atlantic, ill soon be getting involved with Emirates and im also a dispatch supervisor aswell so dont be put off applying for check in jobs.

You could also apply for a baggage handlers job, however IMO, dispatch is the best job you can do in a GFHA, however you are paid better wages as a baggage handler.

Any time ive seen a handling agent post a vacancy its been on the job centre website. The advert I applied from was in a paper. Ive never seen them advertise on any other websites.

Thanks for the suggestions to both of you.

I wont go to college as I study Aeronautical Engineering at university. So apart from the summer, I can only work limited hours... which I know doesn't help when it comes to finding work.

I already work somewhere where I get paid the same or even better than I would be getting paid as a baggage handler, however I would like to work around aircraft if I could.

Do you guys know the name of the companies that operate on ramps etc at Glasgow airport and perhaps where I could find their offices around there?

Thanks again

Menzies and Servisair.

Servisairs offices are in dumbarton court, the other end of the building from the police station, which is opposite terminal 2.

Ive no idea where menzies are.

A quick google will do that for you :)

Servisair aren't looking for anyone, their closing date was 2-3 weeks ago, they just had a bunch of new starts 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the replies.

Who does the weight and balance for aircraft on the ground? Which company I mean?

I guess it is BAA.

At Glasgow,

W+B is different depending on the airline. Airlines handled by Servisair have load sheets (weight and balance, payload, weights etc) are produced in Manchester / Gatwick at a centralised load control.(CLC)

The majority of airlines handled by Menzies have loadhseets produced on station by their operations and Dispatch department.

Menzies don't really have office's based at GLA. The Admin and management are based airside next to the ops department.

It is very unlikely Menzies will be recruiting and time soon.
