Getting into Apron Control
 

Hello People

I am 18yrs old and have been a keen enthuast of Aviation since i was very young. I have just finished my A-levels studying 5 subjects and I am hoping to go into the Aviation Industry and follow my dream of becoming either an ATCO or Apron Controller.

Now i know that, ATCOs have to mainly go through NATS and this was my route after University..however, I am now contemplating after University to try and work in Apron Control, most specifically at Manchester Airport.

I was wondering...who in Manchester Airport is most appropiate to contact regarding training for Apron Control or information on how to get started? I am trying to get a part-time job for the majority of this summer at EGCC for me and a few mates.

In Yr11, I did my work experience at EGCC and went into many departments including: Apron Control and Control Tower, therefore I know what the environment is and what the required skills are.

Who is best to contact for information regarding Apron Control?

Apron Controllers don't need any formal qualification...Contact HR at Manchester to see if there are any vacancies and to register your interest....

its very hard, almost impossible to get a job in apron control at manchester, ever heard of the saying "its not what you know, its who you know!", that is so true here....believe me!

Don't call them Apron Controllers, Marshallers or whatever, they get very upset. They are Airside Operations Personnel.
No you don't need any qualifications to get in. In fact you probably need more academic prowess to become a street cleansing technician than to get a job in Airside plOps.
Go for ATCO. At least your 5 A levels will serve you in good stead for that one. They'd be wasted on the other option.

Take no notice...Sounds like sour grapes advice to me. Notice that he doesn't say what he does....I'll leave the Manch boys to answer the direct insult.
Airfield ops is not as basic as those who just look on with envy imagine. Apron Control is another side of the same coin.

Sorry, i have studied: A2 Geography, ICT, PE, General Studies and As Maths.

I am going to University to study a combined honours in Geography and Computer Studies.

I have vast knowledge and experience from VATSIM of the aerodrome and real world procedures. Also, i have contacts of friends who work at Manchester Airport and also work as an ATCO trainer down near London. Hopefully that gives you a bit more info.

I am sure the fantastic, dedicated, hard working team of Apron Control Officers at my local airport are proud to be called by their official title. I certainly have never heard any complaints!

Woah, i apologise if i've bored you because of the subjects i have taken, i have enjoyed, they might not be exciting to you.

All i wanted is some useful advice and information regarding Apron Control. I've always had the idea of working in the aviation industry. Obviously i don't know everything, but i think to an extent VATSIM as helped me to understand the real-world procedures used all over the world. I'm sorry if i have seemed big headed because i really am not.

And BHXboy, you are correct, from what i saw when i was at MAN, they seemed to be enjoying their job and no one was unsatisfied with them.

Sorry for making a bit huff over one thing. If i'm going to get abuse like this, i will turn somewhere else.
