I learned a saying that has seen me right thru many hours of fixed card ADF approaches - "Head right, turn right" (and vice versa.) To explain, if the head of the needle is to the right of your required course, turn the aircraft to the right. Initially and depending on how far you are from the station and the wind strength, try 10-15 degrees, wait, see what the needle does. If there is no change try 20-25, again wait, see if there is a trend back towards track. I have tried to keep a "gods eye" view of my aircraft in relation to the aid during approaches, its seems to have worked for me. If you are flying the tail of the needle, then reverse the above saying - "head right, turn left." I hope this is not too confusing, there are many ways of saying the same thing. I am sure you will do fine, good luck for your flight test, let us prooners know how you get on.

try this
approaching an NDB :
open 3 of your five fingers THUMB, INDEX, MEDIUM Index = is Your present heading and track(needle) if the desired track is on the right (thumb) go to the left to intercept it if it is on the left (medium) go to the right to intercept. Leaving an NDB the indication will became natural the track will be where indicated in accordance with the tail of the needle......... Seems confusing but it works ... Try also http://www.casaberg.at/en/frameset_main_en.htm I hope it will be usefull Ciao |
