dispatch role?
 

Hello,

Can anyone give me any decent details on the role of a flight dispatcher?

Basicially, i'm looking for an airport/aircraft orientated job that will set me off in the aviation industry. Although I do plan to get my frozen atpl in the future.

Whats the insight into flight dispatch with Servisair? (my local airport is Edinburgh)

What sort of salaries and oppertunitys should I expect?

salary will probably start at startling heights of minimum wage
you just co ordinate the turn around
then smoke ciggies and eat airline meals for the rest of the day

Pay is by the hour and only a few pence above minimum wage.
Promotion above dispatcher seems to be decided on experience rather that ability (often bad dispatchers are promoted to get them off the ramp!!! They normally become trainers :D)

With servisair there are 3 levels of dispatch;

Level 1 - Co-ordinate the turn-around and pass figures to relevant parties, responisible for "triple A" paperwork and auditing, take the blame for delays be it your fault or not!

Level 2 - As level 1+ Limited load control & supervision (normally manual only) also preparing briefing packs & limited amount of flight planning (Mainly trans-atlantic planning suff). Sending movments and messages (SITA). Supposedly get payed more!

Level 3 - Do everything including computerised load control and load planning, SITA, flight planning etc. Supposedly get payed even more.

In reallity it's nothing like this where I work! I am officially level 1 but am required to do manual load sheets, flight planning, SITA messages, cover operations and check in, all for little over minimum wage with zero job security.

I started working at servisair whilst studying for my ATPL theory exams, they kindly allowed me as much time off as I needed to take exams and also to complete my CPL/ME/IR fulltime. There are quite a few fATPL's dispatching for sevisair throughout the country. It is a fantastic way to make contacts and learn the industry. + If you enjoy the airport enviroment it's a really good fun, challenging job.

I hear that Edinburgh is a good station to work at.
