ASI & ALT Calibration for IFR Flight EASA/CAA
 

As a Piper Archer owner on the UK register I administer my own AMP and have always had a requirement to calibrate the ASI/ALT and Transponder every two years to enable flight under IFR in controlled airspace. The regulations for doing so have been listed as being in CAP 562 for the instruments and in accordance with EASA_SIB_2011-15R2_1 for the transponder. I'm aware of the FAA requirements on the subject.

In the process of updating the AMP I've run into some confusion regarding the rules surrounding the ASI/ALT. I can't find anything in CAP 562 that covers the subject so can only think that something's been deleted since my AMP was drawn up. As this was about ten years back it's quite likely.

Having scoured the CAA and EASA websites I can't find any reference to the requirement to calibrate the instruments on a biennial basis and would like to ask if anyone knows where the ruling is (if it still exists).

I think CAP411 was replaced by Part ML some years ago. From what I can find out the only definitive rule is that provided by the FAA in Part 91. Everything else seems to be a grey area.

I agree that there are some very grey areas BB. I was surprised to find that CAP 411/412 are shown as current publications on the CAA web site. CAP 562 still makes reference to the LAMP CAP 766/767, this was withdrawn in 2021 which does not help. I may contact CAA for clarification!

I am not aware of any FAA requirement for periodic ASI calibration. If there is one would some please provide the regulation reference. I am familiar with the requirements for transponder check and IFR altimeter checks.

Me neither. Outside of the CAR 3/Part 23 calibration requirements and a recommendation to calibrate in a couple non-regulatory FAA handbooks, never seen a repetitive calibration check even listed in various mx manuals.

I think you're right. The FAR's are here and only refer to checking the altimeter, encoder and static system along with the transponder.

Thank you all for your responses. I suspect my AMP has remnants of the LAMS in it which is why we've carried on checking ASI/ALT/TX for IFR flight in controlled airspace every two years.
