LHR T4 ramp accident 8 July 2002?
I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about this.
I flew SFO-LHR on BA286 (as SLF), arriving at T4 at about 1300 on 8 July 2002. Baggage delivery was very delayed, due (according to PA inside the terminal) to a serious accident by the side of the aircraft involving some injuries. I'm curious to know what happened, but haven't been able to find out from anywhere else. TIA |
Yes I know - but I'm not going to tell you, I would prefer it you didn't find out because either you are rubber necking or trying to formulate a claim against the airline for missing an appointment or something. Why the time delay? Have you only just got out of the baggage hall? Now that would be a story!

I don't particularly mind if you know but don't want to tell me - that happens all the time for all sorts of reasons. You could have just let it go, you know. But as it happens, it's "none of the above" to your questions. I didn't miss any appointments (other than a shorter-than-expected visit to the gym after I got home). It's not been the most pressing thing in my life since I got home, but the friend I was travelling with has asked me several times over the weeks whether I've heard anything about it - and there have been no reports anywhere. Depending on what happened, there might eventually be a published AAIB report - or there might not. And "rubber necking"? Well, after being held up for about 90 minutes, some curiosity is reasonable. It sounds like it will go unsatisfied. |

I’m sorry so many of you have taken a negative view of my post. I think maybe you haven’t had the experience in the industry that I have had. You haven’t had the lawyer in the USA trying to imply that it was your fault that their client missed their cruise out of Seattle and seeking redress from you personally. It could happen to you!
When this forum started I was a regular poster under another name but it has degenerated into a whinge forum and I haven’t found anything interesting worth commenting on. It is good, but it isn’t the only forum, especially for engineers. When you place a posting you have to know that some airport related newspapers trawl the posts looking for stories for free. These individuals also post as SLF or pilots and engineers in training to glean facts that they can expand on. Read the pilots forum and see the reaction to outsiders commenting on aviation issues that they can never understand. We have to take the same stance. Do you really want me to go into the gory details for your entertainment, will you be happier if somebody loses a leg unloading cargo? If you are normal I hope NO is the answer. |
Speaking personally, I entirely understand why you might want to say nothing for all those reasons. We've all heard about American lawyers and seen the big red warning at the bottom of every page.
It's just that you didn't have to say anything if you didn't want to! I wasn't after gory details. I just thought that someone might say something neutral like "A baggage tug drove into the side of the plane and the driver fell out and banged his head on the ground" or whatever. If someone did lose a leg or otherwise get very badly hurt, I would be very sorry - not happy - particularly as it happened when they were working on my flight. I hope that it wasn't that serious, and in any case I hope that whoever got hurt gets better quickly. Time-ex, if you know them, please would you pass that on for me? |
And I thought we military types were the pessimistic cynical ones.
Yee ha! Hopefully its not all as gloomy in the real world as time-ex would have me believe or I’m ripping up my CV and staying in the nasty game for life. Is time-ex and indication of a someone feeling a bit passed the sell by date? – who do you work for and are they looking for your replacement at a decent wage, good hours, travel opportunities and all that I get from HMG? :( |
Guilt gets the better of me - I have to declare that I have been given a job that restricts my visits to the ramp, but I still have many contacts there. I get all the gossip without having to get involved. I still stand by my point that what you post here on this forum could cause you difficulties later in your career.
My former identity was exposed by those I thought were friends. I am very close to retirement and I don't care that much if I'm exposed again but I know my post stopped some younger guys posting information that could be traced back to them as only a few guys were involved, the police and H&S were involved. BA Engineers be aware that your managers are paid to view these forums and try to match people to posts. They did it with me - they will try to do it to you! Support The Guys In Manchester NOW! LGW guys why not try LHR it's better than nothing?? |

You assume that there is no life outside BA and/or aviation - there is;) If you want to work for BA as an Engineer then LHR may be the only option. Some will go and be pleasantly surprised, others will go and hate it:rolleyes: |
