Job Market for Non Qualified Techs?

What's the job market like in the UK as far as non qualified technicians go?

I'm a time served mechanical fitter/turner looking to move into aviation.

How would I get myself qualified and would the appropriate qualifications be of any use without the appropriate experience?

(1) Most larger companies will employ at least some unqualified mechanics, under supervision and signature of qualified technicians. Having said that, post Sept.11th, there are far fewer jobs than there were, and the pay for unqualified techs is lousy.

(2) You'll find technical colleges near most major airports offering evening classes for the CAA technician (termed LAME, Licenses Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) licenses.
