Trainee Aircraft mechanic

Hello all - I'm looking into trying to get into aircraft engineering and an opportunity nearby has come about that might be right up my street.

However, I am a complete novice when it comes to the laws and order of the mechanics world.

So, can someone tell me the structure of how to become an aircraft mechanic? I understand that you need x ammount of training and then you go on to get a type rating on an aircraft, much like becoming a pilot - but how does the training go? How many exams are there, whats the cost? Is it advisable to have a degree before getting into this profession?

Basically, if you could spare me the time I'd be very grateful if someone could start from day one on 'how to become an aircraft mechanic'.

Many thanks
