MFTDs

Hi folks,
I've been given the poison challice at work of coming up with a proposal to add a maintenance training capability to a cockpit procedures trainer.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has used such a beastie before, and any opinions on if they're any good. For instance, how much free-play is there? how far can you go off the track of the lesson syllabus?
For instance, say an amm procedure called for you to run a ground test on the pressurisation system using the CDU Bite functions, do you go back and play around to see what happens if you pull say an outflow valve CB and then run the test, to see if it will pick up a failed outflow valve motor?
Any thoughts on how useful these things are would be appreciated
Cheers

Aidey
