Engine Starter Lubrication???

Hi,

I read somewhere that the gearbox provides a continued oil flow to the starter in B 737-NG [CFM56]. If I am not mistaken the starter is not supplied with oil through the gearbox in B 737-200 [JT8D].
-Why there is such difference?
-Are the old and the recent starters provided with a different lubrication?

Thank you.
Best regards.

The 737 NG starter on the CFM56-5 is indeed topped up from the engine oil system so no in service topping up is required, however dont forget to fill the starter with oil when fitting it as ity will seize within a few cycles. On the 8D I thought it was a standard old style starter with a sight glass &/or Fill/overflow plug which would be checked for oli level every X amount of Hours/Cycles as per MPD requirments

You're right. JT8D has an overflow plug checked every 125 hours or whatever your maintenance schedule dictates.
