Engineering jobs axed - BMI

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/4436616.stm

Airline BMI is laying off 180 engineering workers and support staff in a reorganisation.
The East Midlands-based firm said all Airbus engineering work will be done at Heathrow, while its Boeing fleet will be maintained at Castle Donington.

BMI director of engineering Ian Davies said the number of redundancies should be less than 100 out of the total workforce of 650.

The firm will continue to maintain its Embraer fleet in Aberdeen.

Mr Davies said the development of the Heathrow unit would create up to 20 new jobs in London.

A BMI statement said: "BMI will outsource some of its own major maintenance work to industry specialists where it can be undertaken in a far more cost-effective way.

"By focusing our engineering functions in this way we are removing unnecessary duplication and creating a far more efficient operation."

Mr Davies said the restructuring should be completed by spring 2006.

All Base Maintenance to be outsourced to Lufthansa Teknik. Baby goes now with Airbus going in April.

Yet more skilled jobs being shipped off-shore.

As an ex employee, I hope the ones that leave find work and find it quick. The engineering side had so much potential to grow in the market and carry out 3rd Party maintenance, but it now seems the investment was just not there. A real shame.

Sorry to hear about the job losses, will all A320 work be done at LHR or Germany.

Where do other UK (and European) airlines go for major Airbus work?

Opportunities missed, I'm thinking.

No change there, then.

Same mess with the training school a few years back.

The only way is down.

Here's wishing all the people, who've just received the well used bmi cricket bat treatment, get better employment as soon as possible.

At least the "better" part should be easy.......it's finding openings close to where you're settled thats tricky. :(

Of course, all this will ease the disposal or handover of the whole sorry mess to Lufty, SAS or whoever else feels brave or daft enough.

There's often been other motives apart from the stated ones.......:suspect:
