Working in Brunei

Anyone worked in Brunei recently. They want 767/PW4000 connies over there long term. Is there still a large expat community in the a/c, gas/petroleum etc business.

Brunei is OK, still a few expats around but not as many as before. All watering holes have run dry, but limited self-import is allowed for non-muslim residents. For entertainment, Labuan is an easy half hour trip now that they have high speed ferries and the terminal has moved to the deep water port at Muara. There is also a land border crossing into Limbang with Off-licence shops just over the other side to save time. Living conditions are good, cost of living reasonable. Brunei is relatively crime free, the locals are friendly and life is generally pleasant and hassle free.

Work conditions for expats in Brunei are reasonable but there is a severe shortage of engineers. RBA just obtained JAR145 approval through the UKCAA and have a contract with Britannia to do 767 "C" Checks next winter. RBA are going through a hard time just now, with the owners (Brunei Government) finally demanding that the company makes a profit. A tall order for what is in effect another Government Department!

Agree with that. I did two stints there one in the 80's and one in the 90's. Easy lifestyle, as an expat they do not give you much grief. RBA have internal probs, as do most airlines. Good for family life, can be a bit tame if your single although plenty of sports, water sports, play in the jungle on bikes type of fun. If you want to party you go to Miri, Labuan, Limbang or further afield to get your rocks off.

I recall schooling was a worry, if you have kids, apart from that, easy first expat step.
