turbine blades
Why have turbine blades got a twist in them? I've read the RR jet engine book but it doesn't explain this very well. Can any one help?

Same reason props do - to get equal thrust/bending force. Or in this case, to equalise the energy extraction. As the tips are going faster than the root then there is need for a lower angle of attack.

Suggestions from my Turbine Engine Consultancy desk friends, (well those that are printable anyway) suggest that you may find it useful to give up on self study and invest some of your dosh in an Engines course at Kidlington (or similar). The RR book does (unfortunately) expect some prior knowledge in the field before you read it. Sorry to be a bringer of bad tidings, :)
