getting out of it....
Okay, we all know someone who knows someone that
left the aviation industry, took their aircraft technical skills, and walked into a wonderful, well-paid, great benefits, no night shift, treated-with-respect job. There are many stories of such moves, and word-of-mouth is that several industries are happy to welcome people with our kind of training and standards. For the benefit of those of us (myself included) thinking of pulling the plug, what particular things have people moved on to? After standing back enough to look with the eyes of a "leaver", I find it very difficult to translate my qualifications. There doesn't seem to be any formal way to make the move, at least not without taking a very large pay cut to start at an entrance level position. How about sharing your stories? If I go, it'll be one less to compete with! Thanks. |
A couple of guys I know have moved from Helicopter Engineering into ROV driving off-shore.
Seems to be very well paid, good promotion opportunities and most places in the UK that run a course require some kind of formal technical training, but are non-specific. Just an idea I suppose....... "Some days you are the pigeon, some days you are the statue!" |

I have a mate who went and work in insurance as an aviation claims assesor(spelling?)Last I heard he was doing well and got a fair amount of travel around the UK/Europe just glancing at damaged a/c,and doing paperwork. GRONCHER know exactly how you feel and if it wasnt for my 2 kids who won't be clear of schooling untill 07 I'd clear off and take less money playing about with boats. Meanwhile I've lowered my expectations so the next time my firm comes up with another scheme to shaft me I'm not so demotivated-simple really.

I've left the industry, now work Monday - Friday and earn just about the same.

I left the industry in 1989 - is it that long - to work in the pub game! Seems quite logical when any time off was spent in the bar anyway<VBG>
I now run a chain of bars for a successful blue chip company, but I do miss the smell of burnt kerosene! |

Ref HeliEng's comment about his mate that changed and went "driving" (it's called flying actually HE)ROV's offshore, if you don't like s%*t hours, night shifts, and buggar all respect then you won't like ROV work offshore. Sure the pay is good and if you are a tech of pretty much any sort (mech/elect) and have good hand eye coord then you will get a job no worries.
