I would just like to warn all the engineers that are applying for work at HAECO in HKG. Please look carefully at the contract and money offered, Hong Kong is not a cheap place to live in. If you have a family so much more expensive. Do not expect to get any salary increases in your time spent here but rather salary cuts will be in the order of the day. What ever you are promised at the interview get it in writing on the day and signed by both parties involved.
The hours you are told to work will be more than what they tell you on the interview. You will be expected to do all sort's of work never done anywhere else in the world on the line and there is nothing you can do. If you complain you will be told if you do not like it you can leave.
If you have never handled four to five aircraft on the ground at the same time think carefully.The aircraft will not be of the same type either so this way they get more work out of you.
So on the surface it looks a good deal but think it over and talk to somebody working there before you accept this position.
One last thing is to accept the fact that there will be engineers that will work next to earning double your salary.

Sounds like your just out of a sheltered workshop and on your first expat contract.You'll either sink or swim.

How come you are not working in HKG if you are so knowledgeable about it? Maybe used to,and then saw the light?:D

You only had to ask here and you would of found out.

Yeah, how come everyone thinks expat work is a bed of roses and we are all rolling in money? Expat life is more interesting, varied and to some extent rewarding than back home, but if I made a quarter of what the locals think I make, I'd have retired to Monte Carlo years ago. :D

Through difficulties to the cinema

Read contracts first,do some ringing around and research,be prepared to negotiate,then sign.Once you've signed,be happy with it and don't break it.You can negotiate your next contract.
Whilst there,wherever that is,try to learn the local language(s),it is appreciated and is something you won't forget.Don't be an ar.....ole of an expat and think your any better because your mat-salleh or quaillo.At the end of the day you'll be better off than if you stayed at the sheltered workshop.Good lucks.

;) Expat work is pretty much the same all over, it will probably never be quite what you expect. You may make more money than you did at home....but it will come at a cost, one way or another.
Never believe what you are told at an interview, after all they are trying to talk you into joining them! And as for written assurances, I think you will find that at most expat organizations they can (and often do) change the contracts anytime they want, you can take it or leave it. Lets face it , we are only "scumbag engineers".
My best advice is go in with your eyes open, find out from the guys there what is really happening, and then make your decision. Be prepare to quit if necessary (easier said than done I know!).

PS. Does this mean I should pull my application for HAECO?...and I so like chinese food.

If you ever eat in the HAECO canteen I can guarentee you'll be put off Chineese food forever!

If you like being messed about do keep your application in. I believe HAECO just dropped the pay to one of the current contractors. His contract was up for renewal and management kept him waiting to the last day before they gave him his new contract. I also believe there is new contractors that are excepting contracts on a much lower scale. Do think carefully about it Hong Kong is not cheap.
Yes, the Haeco canteen does serve 3000 meals a day to people that want to eat that way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what are they paying this time around? They certainly want you to have plenty of cover!!!

Hi there all. Just heard through the Engineering grapevine that a contractor at HAECO just pulled the plug and left overnight?
Is there any truth in this story? Maybe things are just going from bad to worse if that is possible!:D

Well gents it is all happening at HAECO the engineers are resigning. In the last month four have resigned and I believe there are more getting ready to leave. It is mostly about money and the crazy workloads. HAECO are still maintaining their racist attitude towards engineers of Asian countries and paying them less than any other nationality. So this is a warning to anybody that are thinking of going there. Read the contract!:ok:

Interesting to watch how they react to the current market for engineers. With Emirates and Air New Zealand looking in the last few month's for extra engineers it would appear to be a time to look at what is on offer!!!!!!!!

:Confused: Well the circus goes on at HAECO. One of the new engineers from Virgin Atlantic which has only been at HAECO for three months have resigned after the minimum period. The other ex- Malaysian Air Engineers have left already. Now the word is out that HAECO are doing more interviews in UK. So all be aware.
