EASA Part 66 logbook filling information
 

Hi guys,

I have a question regarding the logbook filling.

After completing an EASA part 147 approved basic training my brother wants to join for an on job training with an MRO.

He will get two years of OJT as a trainee. Since he is a trainee (not an employee) he cannot add the tasks to the log book as “carried out”. He only can add the tasks as “assisted” and “observed”. If he add tasks only with assisted and observed within his two year ojt period and then apply for the license, will it be an issue?

Need a quick guidance please.

In the vast majority of cases the OJT book entries would be signed off by the licensed Engineer that you brother works with at the MRO. Just tell your brother to get as involved in the tasks as much as possible and offer assistance as much as possible, rather than standing back and just watching. Most licensed Engineers are more than happy to pass on their experience and watch over new trainees. Also, a very important thing, is always to ask the advice of the experienced staff that he works with for anything that he is not sure about or doesn't understand.

From the guidance that came down from our quality department [in the UK] regarding the OJT part of experience that both apprentices and also graduates that we had come through our workplace that were there for "hands-on" experience, then the advice was that the licensed Engineer overseeing the trainee [whether that be an apprentice or graduate] was to make sure before signing off an particular job in the trainee's work experience book that they had at least assisted in the job listed in their book. In the UK at least, they were clamping down on just "observation" as part of the job, is of course, having hand-skills. While observing a job is good, it isn't the same as actually participating in the job.

Also strongly advise asking the Licensed Engineer if he/she is happy/willing for assistance/observing task and VERY important also ask if the Engineer is OK to sign/stamp the entry in logbook. Make sure if agreement has been given that the logbook entry is accurate with references etc., and presented for sign/stamp within a day or so, NOT a few weeks later as likely get a frosty response plus never ever get another entry signed/stamped!

Do you mean that the log book can be filled with observed and assisted tasks only for the whole two years. Then he can apply for the license and the NAA will accept it. He will not be able to write any task as carried out tasks. Only he can write the tasks as observed and assisted tasks

What I was saying was that in the UK, they were clamping down on "observed tasks" you had to a least assist and in that way the trainee filling in the log book can then enter the task as "carried out" No local authority would expect a trainee to have carried out all the tasks listed entirely on their own [some simple tasks under supervision maybe] There will be a number of the tasks that will obviously be an "assisted task" but you still list them as a task you have carried out. For example, an engine change, would be carried out by a number of people in a team [and could be a mix of licensed, non-licensed, trainees, apprentices etc]

As I stated in my previous answer, list only what you have been involved in, get the licensed engineer you worked with to over-stamp you book entry as soon as possible after the event, so it is fresh in everyone's mind and be prepared when you do eventually go for your license to answer questions on the tasks you have listed in your OJT.

Tell him not to stress too much about it, I sure wherever he goes to get his OJT the staff there will be able to give him good local advice.

Don't get a UK licence. To get a basic licence you have now to do the jobs now. To get a first type rating you have to do the jobs off a list. Been like that for 7 years now.

The OP is in Sri Lanka so probably not going to get a UK licence..
