Underwing Sight Gauge for Fuel quantity indication
Hi guys
do you guys heard about underwing sight gage before how does it operate? |
Stearman has one, the glass tube has an indicator in it, above in the tank it has a float attached to the indicator, as the level drops the float drops and the quantitiy indicator also drops, picture here

Going back a day or two. The drip-stick on the Brits. Pull it out and when fuel came out read the level off the stick. Never a problem.

The L188 Electra had drip sticks like the Viscount and Brit.
Then we got an Electra with sight sticks. You had to look up at the lower end of the stick and it was dark when the top was covered by the fuel and light when uncovered. The only problem was if the seal around the stick leaked you got a drip of fuel in the eye. Is this the sort of sight gauge you are looking for? |
Vc10's were MLI sticks. Ahhhh the fun and games, flight planning computer gives them the fuel load then the flight eng asks you on the side for an extra couple of K and lose it, then so does the pilot. With judicious transferring you could lose it in the galleries and up the fin without it indicating on the gauges, the eng would then select the supposedly indicating empty fin and empty it in flight. |
Boeing uses underwing float sticks on most models (excluding out-of-production with dripsticks, and 787, which does not have a mechanical fuel indication system. Don't know about 777x). The work and look like as shown below. If you Google for "fuel measuring stick manual" you might find something interesting to read.
