g5 garmin efis certified aircraft

Hi all
I have been thinking on installing a G5 garmin efis on my certified aicraft. I basically just want it for the artificial horizon capability) so no need to plug it to the static/dynamic. My question is, can I just buy the experimental version of the G5 and fit it myself ( dont have part66 licence unfortunately) in one of the holes of the panel and use the build-in gyroscope accelerometer?
p. s. the aircraft's never had an artifical horizon
many thanks

In principle, nothing precludes you from installing uncertified equipment in a certified aircraft if it's to be used as secondary reference only. However, if you are going to install it permanently and wire it to the electrical system of the aircraft, then you need a Part 66 guy to do it, but it shouldn't be too expensive, especially if you piggyback it to an annual. On the other hand, you may exploit the non-permanent installation exemption if you already have a power socket and power it from there, or if you buy the backup battery (which is part of the kit for the certified G5 only) and just charge it before the flight. A fully charged battery lasts 4-6 hours.

Thank you Ultranomad for your answer! And do you know if also the part 66 mechanic can plug the uncertified g5 to the static/dynamic legally?

thanks

My feeling is yes, but don't quote me on that. On the other hand, if I were you, I'd go for the certified one anyway. G5 is a very versatile and convenient instrument, and it offers tremendous value for the money. In particular, the kit with the magnetometer (GMU11) will give you not only an AI, but also a slaved compass; you can either switch between the AI and DG/HSI presentations, or just use the compass scale on the AI. There are certain mode limitations prescribed for the certified usage, but nothing will physically preclude you from switching a certified instrument into any mode you want - everything is easily programmable from the front panel.
