Hello all - Couple of B1 licence Questions.

Good evening all.

Firstly thanks to all the guys out there who have posted on pprune over the years, whenever i am searching something related to AME in google i always inevitably end up here!

But i still have some questions and thought it was about time i made an account now i have graduated.

Just a little background information for you - i have recently graduated with a BSC Degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in the UK.

Alongside the degree i completed EASA part 66 Modules (The uni is a 147 Approved organisation) and have completed 8 of the modules at the 75% pass rate so far. (i will complete the remaining in my spare time at a nearby centre whilst working and gaining experience).

I am now working in a Private maintenance organisation which is operating out of a MOD/RAF airfield. It deals with a real variety of aircraft from light piper aircraft to military jets.

I have my CAP 741 B1 logbook and have nearly filled in all of section 2.1 Basic Skills, But would like some guidance on section 3.1 Maintenance Experience.

My questions at the moment are

#I know the section should be ordered in ATA chapters but do i need to
include all 92 ATA chapters?
if not which do i need to include and what can i exclude?

#Should i just complete all of the "typical maintenance tasks" listed in the
back (and some additional extras) on aircraft which will fall under my
targeted licence.

#Having read the engineers licensing guidance document from the CAA i now
realise i must apply for the licence but also apply for a specific type rating at
the same time to attain the initial license? (correct?) - therefore shall i aim
to try and complete all the tasks on or two types of aircraft where possible?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, if you have any other information or would advise me to go about it in a different way than i am proposing above i am fully open to that.

B1 is a bit vague what are you really looking to obtain B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, B1.4?

Fully support your application with your work experience completed (5 years)

the ELGD was withdrawn a while ago as regulation superseded some of the content, read part 66, EASA FAQs

Hi jon,

Not all ATA chapters are possible per aircraft group. For example b1.1 will not have ata 13 but b1.3 will not have ata 57. But yes you should have something for each applicable ata as the surveyor will use a check sheet with all ATA chapters on it.
Some chapters of your logbook will be naturally lighter than others dependant on your work. As a target you should aim for a broad cross section of work inclusive of troubleshooting/fault diagnosis, inspections, removal/refit, testing, MEL/CDL dispatch (if applicable), wiring, repairs.
The typical tasks section is a good reference but break each job down for example if you change a light assembly how did you diagnose it and test the rectification.
You can apply for the basic licence without a type rating if you like, you do not need a type rating in conjunction but in time you will require a type rating anyway to gain an approval.

Hi Jon,

From what I remember you need to log experience in a PART145 environment...you need to check if the company you're working for has that approval. If not, contact the CAA (Engineer Licensing) for clarification of your particular situation.

You don't need to do all Chapters - for whichever licence you're aiming for - but you do need to do at least 50% across all applicable chapters if you can.

Again, If you find 50% impossible contact the CAA.

Best of luck

Work experience documentation

Hello Jon,
the Swiss and the Austrians do have good sample tasks, even for B1 and B2.
Nobody can complete all tasks, this is simply not feasible.
Of course you must complete essential stuff.
We used to be creative, but not lying, when we only worked on turbine on-wing engines. By replacing ignitor plugs, we also checked for burner can shifting. No chafing marks on ignitor plug = no burner can shifting.... :O
Have fun writing your logbook
