As an ex draughtsman, when I look at aircraft in museums I often think of the guys over drawing boards working out how to solve problems of design or build.
This takes me way back to a former life.

Having started work as a draftsman in the aerospace industry back when things were still done on drawing boards using pencil/vellum, I can say the primary function of draftsmen was to create engineering documentation defining what the finished product should conform to. By the time most draftsmen were assigned a task, the product design was already established.
