TSO life of a Lear Siegler starter generator pn 23032-048. Our tech records are classifying this starter generator used on BO105 helicopters as 1000 hours overhaul life, the same as its predecessor -027. I am believing it should be 1500 hours as various improvements have been made including its bearings changed to something stronger (the extra life was the reason for the changes). Considering the value of the extra 500 hours available, any info on the overhaul life would be much appreciated, with a reference. I have searched the Internet and only come up with sellers and whatever, Lear Siegler itself has gone through various changes of ownership. Lucas also made this part but again getting precise life details has been unsuccessful with the E mail 'bouncing' back unreplied to. Any help would be much appreciated.

I assume that your starter-generator is an authorised option for your aircraft, then the overhaul life is in chapter 05-10 (component overhaul life) of your maintenance planning manual (EASA or FAA as applicable). It maybe that the aircraft manufacturer has not yet caught up with a possible life increase and consequently not issued a revision.

Bluesafari. Thanks for the input. Yes the starter gen is an approved item as per IPC and airframe maintenance manual. The manual are recent updates and the info is 1000 flight hours. (ref BO 105 MM Ch 101-14.1) However no part number is given in the MM, several exist in the IPC. Looking through SBs of years back the reason for the re numbering was using strengthened bearings and for an improved life of 1500 hrs. Our tech records are improving (its leased out service) but have omissions. My next step will be contact the overhaul company in Australia that does our starter gens.

Don't forget you will still have to get a revision to your MM from the aircraft manufacturer to extend the overhaul period, or a dispensation from them and/or your airworthiness authority. IMHO the generator manufacturer can only recommend, the aircraft manufacturer is the one who issues the overhaul limits

Don't know how other civilian authorities outside FAA handle this issue. But if by chance your aircraft is N reg then you can petition the FAA FSDO with jurisdiction for a TBO extension. Then do your homework, put st/gen on a lead the fleet plan, and have FAA grant extension.


FYI, you probably won't get any help from airbus on this. They'd be happier if 105 would go way like a Lama. They probably allowed the -48 as an alternate to be nice, but won't revise the approved docs in MM. Lear has no dog in this hunt.
