Where Do Tires Go When They Die?
 

Given tires have a limited service life I'm wondering what happens to them when there done. I understand they can be retreaded several times but even these are limited and I presume they are eventually scrapped and either shredded to make new tires or dumped in landfill.

The reason I'm asking is I'm working on a garden sculpture and would like 2 747 tires (or similar) and was hoping I may be able to pick up a decommissioned set. I live in Australia and tried calling QANTAS but not having any contacts in the industry I did not get far. Would anyone know how I would go about getting a pair?

Slarti, you could try Air Treads Australia, across the freeway from Essendon airfield.

They used to retread big jet tyres, and I assume they still do it.

No idea if they will sell you a couple that have hit the retread limit, but no harm in asking.

Slarti, try these following companies. Used aircraft tyres are popular for agricultural use - and even some industrial uses - after they have reached their useability limits for aircraft fitment. These tyre dealers have access to reasonable supplies of all types of used aircraft tyres.

Also used to make artificial reefs and shredded tyres make an excellent retardant for firearms ranges.

It's true, I did a double take when I saw 'Max Speed 200mph' on the sidewall of a tractor tyre. :ok:

Round here, many old vehicle tyres (scores of them, it's obviously a dealer) get thrown out of the back of a moving vehicle, into hedges and farmers' fields. Sometimes there's one every ten metres or so, about as long as it takes to reach in and pick up another and sling it, while someone else drives slowly along.

The innocent buyers of new replacement tyres are paying these ar$£&oles a mandatory fee for "environmentally friendly disposal" off their old casings.... :mad:

I think I know which company is doing it but can't prove it. I have seen their vans driving slowly round the local country lanes and they aren't from round this neck of the woods, but the nearest city. I can't imagine they drive around narrow and remote country lanes for the fun of it...especially after normal working hours.

When tires die ... they undergo an immortal transition into something greater, leave this side of reality with a whistle on their rubber lips, enter eternity brave and boldly, thereafter sitting on the right side next to our holy Son'o'road, praying to the gods of rubbish and promiscuity, spending their holidays off at the planet next by, where all the disappeared ballpoints travelled to and joint to dance the celebration of Fish&Chips, Amen!
