Acceptable Free Play in Control Hinges
Gents, just has issue from a recent audit, saying that the free play in some of the control circuit was too much. Nothing is laid out in any of the manuals.
Is there any way to quantify the acceptable limit, as I can see anything in AC 43-13 and the manufacturer cant quote a figure. Its a GA (Piper ) type aeroplane. TVM Paul |

Did you ask him to define the limits?
It depends on your aircraft type too, the likes of a Cherokee hinge the later ones have a Teflon sleeve in them, or was it play in the trim jack as there is limits or a SB for those if I remember correctly. thanks gents for your time responding. I cant find anything definitive to help me. Its a judgement call on this.

Just spend the money and fix it. It's better to err on the safe side and not have to worry about it.

Piper SL 609 refers to it but no limits so judgement. If you have the manuals try looking at a later more upmarket model that has a similar layout of hinge, chances are they may lay down a limit you can use as a basis.
ie a Seneca 1V gives this as a Stab tab freeplay limit and that has similar hinges to the PA28 etc 2. TOTAL TAB FREE PLAY IS NOT TO EXCEED 0.06 INCH . |
