B1 Maths
 

Hi all,

I want to start towards B1 licence, I would like to kick off with module 1. Maths.

I have Maths GCSE grade B and Science A but no maths A level. All some 8 years ago but I have the Edexcel intermediate book for referencing things like fracs,%,equations, trig, geometry etc

I have looked at LRTT http://www.lrtt.co.uk/easa-part-66-module-1-maths.html who run an online course for module one at £350 inc vat which seems a lot, but if its what I need then I may have to fork out. My maths isn't too bad so I don't know what to do; is there a book I can buy instead like the PPL confuser with all the questions in it?

So far I have found the following resource. How up to date are those practise questions?

I wouldn't pay £350 to do the maths module. Some modules are worth paying for, but maths in my mind is not one of them. Get the part 66 syllabus for maths and study accordingly. When your happy, go to club66pro.com and pay for the module 1 study questions and see how you go. If you stroll through those, go for the exam and that will be one down :ok:

If it's any help - I used Licence by post for their Mod 1 books and learnt through them. I found the books useful as a guide, and you get practice papers - these are very helpful. In addition I used aircraftengineer.info with Sal Khan videos and more questions to understand the subject as my maths is poor. I passed earlier this year with over 90%. Hard work but I was extremely happy with that result. PM me if you woould like practice questions for the modules. Good luck - oh - do the mods in order, best way I have found 1-5 certainly.

Thanks for your reply guys, saved my 350 quid, thinking about it now, it makes total sense. Much rather pay for the difficult topics that I don't know much about.

Those websites are great thank you. What would you say the exam focuses on most, for instance is there a large batch of questions on equations or conversion? Any likely to catch me out due to nature of the wording?

I've done B1 Maths and I wouldn't say it was overly taxing on the mind. If you're GCSE proficient then you shouldn't have too many problems.
If I remember correctly then in B1, the highest level you should see are quadratic equations. It has been a short while however.

Look at Part-66 Annex I
 

Why don't you simply look at the Appendix 1 to Part-66 and look at the knowledge requirements for Maths. This is the smallest unit compared to all the other units. It tells you exactly what you need to learn.

Get a good book, or even go online, and learn what you need. You should find the required knowledge in any good GCSE and A level maths book. The maths is not higher than A level, and even then, it's pushing it.

Part-66 annex 1 gives you pages and pages of all knowledge requirements for all Part-66 exams. This is a good guide to what you need to learn and know. You can tick off each bit of knowledge as you learn it (basic, medium or thorough as described in the annex).

Have you checked the full requirements for obtaining a B1?

The experience and OJT is a lot harder to obtain than passing the exams unless you are already employed in an MRO or on a recognised training scheme.

Much cheaper, most university aero-eng degrees use this book, which comes with a lot of online material. My (ex) stepson also just used it successfully to get into university to study physics, with only minimal support from me. I still use my (much older) copy for occasoinal reference.

£40 would be a great deal cheaper than £350 as well !
