allosaurus 29th Nov 2012 17:47

How much money you got?

The90sAME 29th Nov 2012 17:56

I was looking in the region of £50, however, if its more, ill still look at it.

Just shoot your suggestions, Regardless of price.

grounded27 29th Nov 2012 18:47

I have owned the Leatherman ST, ST-200 and now ST-300. They have continuously developed one better Super Tool after another the 300 is the best multi tool I have ever known.

Engineer_aus 30th Nov 2012 01:25

Wave for me also, Gerber just to flimsy for our needs.

grounded27 30th Nov 2012 14:27

My wife keeps a wave in her purse, it's a Gucci tool. All in good fun. I feel the ST's are best suited for line work, if you go on leatherman's website you will see it is listed as a heavy duty tool and I am super impressed with the -300. You need to just pick one up to understand what I mean. The cutters are suitable for everything from cutting .40 to shearing string tye and are replaceable for the first time ever. I do not like the stubby phillips on the wave or the gerber, the -300 gives you reach and torque. The lock/release mechanism has improved, easy to use and super dependable

The90sAME 30th Nov 2012 16:48

Cheers for the suggestions, ill look into them both :)

Another question, have you had any issues getting them airside?

Once its through initially it should be fine, it'd live in my toolbox. Im just unsure whether security would not allow it through due to the sharps.
I do have a tools permit along with my airside pass, so i can take tools though.

However, i have had security make a fuss over my tin punch when i first brought that through, even with my tool permit.

Exup 30th Nov 2012 19:28

Have to agree leatherman wave is spot on, but I currently have a gerber does the same job & is cheaper. What are people expecting them to do, they are a quick & easy tool to use but no substitute for a real toolbox. If you will break a gerber you'll break a leatherman

grounded27 30th Nov 2012 20:17

Security has been the same issue with us as well, they do not care once the tool is airside. We can get a tool pass cleared but it is a major pain. People have been known to have mgt. use an airside vehicle that can go off field, simply ship the item to your work address. Takes some creativity sometimes.

The90sAME 30th Nov 2012 20:29

Ive gone foe the ST300, mainly because i found it on offer for £60 from £88, whilst the wave still sits at around an average of £80.

My only issue is, im travelling around airports the airline i work for, fly from, to gain experience towards my A1 license, so i have no permanent work address, yet. And a few airports are more anal about security than others.

grounded27 1st Dec 2012 04:51

Dip it in oil or even better skydrol if you are worried, doubt the buggers would want to touch it. Wise choice with the ST300 in this matter, no visable sharps.

The90sAME 1st Dec 2012 09:46

Ill give it a shot when im back on the line after winter.

Cheers :)

Flatface 9th Dec 2012 03:41

I got the first Leatherman before they had all the model names, it broke so I got a Swisstool. Someone told me to send the Leatherman back to the manufacturer, they sent me a brand new Blast in the mail. It is much better than the original Leatherman.

spannersatcx 9th Dec 2012 05:51

Ill give it a shot when im back on the line after winter.

Lucky you, all snuggled up inside your nice warm hangar for the winter, get out on the ramp it's the only place to be in the winter!

Only until i get my license aha. Then its 100% Line :ok:

Its not always warm though! APU runs and dry-cycling can be done in the hangar, so the doors are open more often than not

I am usually a made in China guy myself, I use a multi tool daily. Then again I keep about a dozen made in China pens handy. Anyways A leatherman and the Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver are the two tools that I don't mind spending money on.

The90sAME 30th Dec 2012 00:46

Got my Leatherman for Christmas, pretty impressed with the build quality.

So I have;
Leatherman ST300
Fenix LD20 Torch
Tin Punch
Pen.

Thats all i need to be a line engineer isnt it? ;) :p

JAKL 30th Dec 2012 01:13

About 14 years ago I had a fantastic multitool. It was supplied by Buck and Hickman, was all stainless steel with plier/cutter and the normal blades and drivers. It had ruler measurements in metric and inches and printed or stamped into the handle were the words 'PROTOOL' and 'MADE IN AMERICA'.
Foolishly I put it down while on a job, walked away for a few minutes and it was gone when I got back.
I've searched the Internet since, but haven't found a replacement 'PROTOOL'.
If anyone has come across the maker, I'd be grateful for information.

Bushfiva 30th Dec 2012 02:01

Sounds like a Leatherman predecessor of the ST300.

Blackhander wannabe 1st Jan 2013 12:15

Any of you guys had the chance to compare a decent SOG to the leatherman? Curious, had a sog for years and loved it till it got flogged.

Cant let the crew fly on bad food! Must be taste tested first.

I've got a Leatherman Wave with the driver bit set. But if you can afford to carry a second multi-tool, I've found the Leatherman Crunch (folding locking pliers) to be quite handy as well.

Surprisingly good though these Mickey-mouse tools are, they're no substitute for the proper thing at times. Agreed, they can get you out of a hole but respect their limitations.

JAKL..Buck & Hickman were in Salford,a massive place in the 50's I don't know if they're still trading...Try google for them or the tool.
