Importing Avionics from USA
 

I am currently training for my IMC rating but don't have a glideslope receiver fitted to my King Nav/Comm unit. My question is: I can quite easily get hold of the glideslope receiver i need from various avionics suppliers in the USA but will this unit need to be certified to fit into my UK registered aircraft?

Ask for it to come with FAA8130-3 certificate, that should suffice, as long as whoever is going to install it is happy with the paperwork. If the vendor is also a Repair Station, they should be able to issue one without the unit going for another bench test.

Some places charge extra, some don't.

If the aircraft is maintained under Part M Subpart F, you can install a repaired item from the USA without a dual-release FAA 8130-3; if it is maintained under Part 145, you'll need a dual-release FAA-8130-3 (i.e. the item must have been repaired by an EASA-approved FAR 145 ).
New items from the USA should come with an FAA 8130-3 (copy acceptable if multiple items on one form).

Thanks for the feedback. I will make sure i enquire as to what paperwork the various glideslope receivers that i have seen have.

Even if you get the right paperwork for the glideslope receiver - you still need an EASA minor mod to approve the installation (adding a glideslope capability where there isn't one already). Does your indicator have a glideslope pointer? Does your nav antenna coupler have a spare glideslope conection? It's not just a matter of plugging in the box.

Does it need a minor mod? If he can find a previously installed one on the same type and fit can he not get round that one under grandfather rights? I would imagine it has been installed on quite a few types.

If the mod existed under in Member State pre 2003 or there is an STC currently currently approved by EASA, you should be OK. As always, pick up your phone and call one of the few remaining UK CAA Regional offices for advice (i.e. the one closest to you).
