opening doors

in B747 manual ata 52 says can open and leave doors open in winds up to 65 knots but electric motors might stall at 40 knots

muduckace 5th Sep 2009 10:19

I seem to remember 40 kts, not absolutely sure.

IFIX 5th Sep 2009 15:41

Acc AMM 52-34-00-010-003 : Do not operate the cargo door in winds of more than 40 knots maximum speed.
The door is resistant to ground winds of 52 knots maximum when held open in the 85 degree or the 165 degree position.

Could not find the limits for opening when not on the ground:E

No limits...
Nice one ! :ok:

Don't mean to go OT here, but has anyone done manual opening of the main deck cargo doors before ?

Flightmech 8th Sep 2009 09:18

HAWK21M,

Yes, the main deck cargo door on the MD-11 does have a canopy position.

Flightmech 8th Sep 2009 09:21

Leewan,

Yes, manual opening of the MD-11 main deck door is easy. Far easier than all that winding when manually opening the lower doors.

Flightmech,

How do you do a manual opening of a MD 11 main deck cargo door ? I was under the impression that you need biceps the size of arnie's to open them. Did a manual opening of a 747 paxs aft door once with only a speed handle. My arm ached for a week after that.:ouch: Staying on the subject, can the nose cargo door on a 744F be manually opened and is it also the same manual cranking done for the 744F main side cargo door ?

Flightmech 8th Sep 2009 20:31

No, MD11 its easy. Open vent door as usual. Use the handle (located in the floor in the MCD control panel adjacent L1 door) to unlatch the door (from the outside). Then place same handle in hand pump receptacle in the control panel, pull the normal control handle up and twist in open direction, while simultaneously using the handpump to pump open the door. The pump has a good stroke and doesn't take much time or effort to fully open. Reverse the procedure for closing, but the hooks that secure the door in canopy position will need manually moving out of the way on the way down as the door passes through it. When door closed use the handle to manually latch door from the outside. Close vent door. Thats it. Not to bad all all. Far easier than all those turns to unlatch a belly door and again all those turns to open it.

Leewan - I understand the nose door does have manual ops provisoon - not sure if power drive is allowed - never operated it ( so sidesaddle seat ) :ok:

IFIX 10th Sep 2009 20:21

@Seldom Fixit
The main deck cargo door on a MD-11 is hydraulically operated by a ram fed from a stand alone hydraulic system.
Normally pressure is supplied by an electric pump in the nose wheel well, alternately through the use of a hand pump, integrated into the operating panel at door 11.
No gearbox or manual drive with a speedy.

Hey man I was in Miami when that Dc-8 did an air turn back with the cargo door open. i want to say it was Arrow air, but none the less they just closed the door and kept trucking.
