What is maintenance fitter?

Dont know if it was mentioned before but I'm from the the other side of the pond and i see a lot of employers in the UK looking for maintenance fitters and i just want to know what exactly is a fitter. Also, can I work as a fitter with a FAA A/P license with experience?

A fitter is basically an unlicenced mechanic.

Yes an unlicenced mechanic that is time served or equivalent. You would normally have to provide proof of training and experience.

Usually it's aircraft or airframe/engine/electrical fitters that are advertised.
If it just says maintenance fitters it could be for ground equipment or airport services.
