Hi,
I am currently studying for my A-Levels, I have found a university course that I would like to do, It is Aircraft Engineering. This is a 4 year placement, which combines the practical and theoretical aspects of flying with the principles of aircraft engineering. During your first year you work for your PPL. I am hoping to follow on to become an airline pilot, or failing that, some kind of Aircraft engineer. Has anyone got any advice about the course etc.

Apart from the PPL your degree will not assist you in your aim of becoming an airline pilot. Then you have to ask yourself the question "how much use will the rest of the course be if I want to be an engineer?"

If I were you I would look a bit more widely at engineering courses (if that is indeed what you want to do) and consider doing a PPL in your own time. Your degree is your backup if the pilot bit doesn't work out. Remember that the odds are long, the competition fierce and the cost high if you go it alone.

I don't know much about Salford specifically, but courses of this nature (there is a similar one at Sheffield) are intended to produce Engineers with a good understanding of flying, rather than future airline pilots.

That in itself is a very good thing in my opinion, but it's best to go into the course knowing what you are really aiming for.

Does anyone think that it is worth doing a degree in aircraft engineering as a backup for going into the airlines. What kind of jobs can you get with this degree?

The other option is that Salford has a very good University Air squadron which could assist your route into the flight industry

If you search on this forum, you'll find quite a lot of threads discussing Aero-Eng degrees, their various merits and what career options they give you.

1) Salford's course is excellent

2) Long after Airbus obviate the need for drivers they will still need Engineers
