Grrr FMC and MCDU !!!

hello,

I'm an aircraft technician working for a major airline in South Asia.

I have a good knowledge about the systems and the cockpit but I found it difficult to learn the FMC. I always try to learn things through the MDCU interface but I have no idea how to use it other than taking a print of PFR.

I'd like to master the FMC. Can anybody suggest me a good learning material for that or any video, website please ?

Thanks in advance

There is basic info in creating a flight plan, we do this often on certain aircraft types to T/S A/P problems. The school of hard knocks is how I learned on our type's. seems some may be afraid to post more detail, not knowing who we are giving this information to. The AMM has nothing on this, like I said, hard knocks. Your best bet is to ask a pilot you work with. It is really simple once you understand the basic data required.

For any maintenance work that requires the use of any FMC/CDU functions, the procedure is clearly laid out in the FIM/AMM

If you're talking about pilot use of the FMC then your best bet is to have a play with Flight Sim software of the type you are interested in!

I have yet to see anything more than a procedure for INIT. I have found loading a bogus flight plan helpful many times in replicating and troubleshooting PIREPS.There is no AMM procedure for it in any of the aircraft types I have worked.

In nearly 30 years of working on Boeing types I've never had any issues finding the correct procedure when needing to access FMC/CDU functions as part of a documented maintenance task!

So what do you do when A pilot claims his V-speeds disappeared (typically pilot error)? Or they screw up an NDB update and a way-point or even airport is missing from it? FMS maintenance IS poorly supported. Shotgunning FMC's that come back as NFF from overhaul get's expensive. On the MD-11 you need an active flight plan inserted for the FMA's to turn to white boxes (active), if you can catch the flight crew in time (and the FCC's have not faulted themselves) knowing how to completely enter a flight plan makes for easy T/S, no approved maintenance data to do this. I am an avionics tech working line MX of 20 years and have hundreds of inbd and outbd flights daily in my sandbox, I see some wierd stuff.

I see enough of it to know the FIM/AMM of any aircraft will never cover every scenario.
