VB flight deck visit
 

Just a quick question guys.

Flying up to Brisbane from Melbourne tonight with VB and was wondering what the chances of visiting the flight deck in flight were?

Tried with QF last year but it was only a few months since Sep 11 and they said no-go.

Would it help if I showed my flight crew licence? Only commercial but could be better then nothing. :confused:

Any info would get great. Thanks guys.

Marshall I think you will find that most airlines world wide (including Virgin) still have a no entry policy to anyone other than company crew or a CASA (in Oz) inspector. It is a bit sad that we cant let guys like yourself in, as in my opinion we should be encouraging blokes like yourself to get up the front and have a look.

Hopefully when things settle down and they devise a known pilots registar for confirmation of identity, you will get your wish.

Marshall, as Shakespere said, the answer is definately no. It is a great shame as we were all in your position wanting to come up the front and have a look and pick the guys brains for some help. We have had guys come up the front after we have landed, that is not a problem at all. Its all still very strict on flight deck visits.

Yep and I reckon we are going to lose a whole heap of kids to aviation in the future because of it.

Maybe that has an upside though. At least there may be shortage of drivers in ten years time and we can get better pay and conditions instead of having to go back to the lowest common denominator!

I started sticking my head into the cockpit when I was three.By the time I was seven I had been around the world a couple of times and I knew what I was going to do when I grew up.
I agree with Keg who asks how many kids we are going to lose from a future in aviation because of this situation.
What a sad world we we are creating when a child cannot come up to the flightdeck, a man cannot talk to children (without people wondering whether he will harm them) and a doctor cannot help an accident victim by the side of the road without the threat of being sued.

Show your license, I'm not giving any further details but I've had 2 flight deck visits since 9/11 on DJ one including a landing at YSSY in a 737-800.

You may be able to pre arrange it with ops, the day before, go up there and show your licence etc, the captain still has the final say

Pleased to say I got a ride on the deck of a QF Dash several months ago, never thought I would but when you despatched a bloke several hundred times Iguess he can use his judgement.

Most enjoyable, the Barbie F27 - but one has to be careful of the cockpit door being opened unexpectedly - splat on the floor backwards material!!

It is sad wide eyed kids will not have the chance to glimpse the future we had.

The Department of Transport has mandated what they call ASM's - added security measures - that restricts the availability of access to the flight deck from doors close to doors open.

Having a flight crew licence or in fact an ID from another carrier won't work unfortunately.

Some bureaucrat from CB has made a decision as a result of political and or popular pressure and we must abide by it.

It sucks really, but we are legally obliged to abide by it.

The annoying thing is that these ASM's can be introduced without having to pass through parliament - they are a dictate from the mandarins and there is no appeal.....

Then there's the story of a QFLink skipper who had his son on the F.D. during a turn around.

Story goes that an F/A didn't approve and sent a nastygram to the CIA.

Ah weell, that is because some of the FA's reckon THEY should be in command, or at least 2nd in command.

In any event, Company policy would have been the decider if it was a turn around, as the ASM is applicable only after the doors are closed.

Hope she/he gets a good swift kick to the behind - the FA that is!

Yes tis most sad; when I was (a lot) younger the Captain would sometimes have a minature Company model aircraft to give cockpit visitors (cunning marketing really - and yes I know its a flight deck now, but this was then).

BTW mppgf, medical officers or anyone else for that matter rendering aid at the site of an incident, may be sued. That is the common law right of the individual. Australia doesn't have the so-called 'good samaritan act'.

BUT to succeed, they must be able to prove a duty of care and subsequent negligence and injury. No action has yet been brought against a person whowithin the limits of their knowledge and ability, carries out actions that a reasonable person with the same level of skill and knowledge would carry out, acting in good faith and for the welfare of the injured party. Conversley, there does exist in Law substantial penalties for NOT rendering such aid as the individual is capable of doing in such a situation - not to mention the moral issues.

If that doesnt drive you to drink you are not suitable airline material.
