Ops Normal

We used to have to taxi across the Tanami Hwy at Rabbit flat to the road house to drop off our freight. That was in the 80's

Windshear 6th Jul 2002 08:19

BP had a T V ad. showing a 747 landing to fill up with at a road side self serve ......... so it must be true ;)

Torres 6th Jul 2002 09:58

Well Windy, somewhere there's a photo of a YC King Air 200 parked right outside the Birdsville Pub, nose it, with parked LandCruisers either side.

I wonder if they take carnet cards?:p

The 'South Road' between Alice & ADL. Before it was sealed. I'll never forget that jjjjjjjjourneyyyyy!

Capt Claret 6th Jul 2002 12:48

Veg,

There's a roadhouse on the Western side of the Highway, South of Coober Pedy I think, where they park a bug smasher on the roadhouse driveway.

When needed, they taxi it to the strip behind the roadhouse. Last time I saw it there, was when the Maree Man was all the rage.

alidad 6th Jul 2002 13:06

Always thought they were called PETROL stations in this part of the world. Please don't litter the outback with foreign terms.

compressor stall 6th Jul 2002 23:26

Somewhere I have a photo of my little warrior parked between the 4wds at the william creek pub.

I have heard though that even those days are past, parking is now behind the pub.:(

And Vege, it could have been an ultralight....their Rotaxes take unleaded I believe. I remember at TBR a gyrocopter taxying in for fuel.

A lot of the roadhouses on the Nullabor have strips that lead nearly right up to the roadhouse itself, such as Caiguna. Parking is right behind the bowsers so roadhouse customers often have the opportunity to gawk at aircraft and dodge propellor blades.

The strips at Madura roadhouse are on the other side of the highway which provides the excuse to taxi across it. Not what the insurers want to see, though.

OZBUSDRIVER 7th Jul 2002 00:02

we have got a good video of 3 R22s leaving a roadhouse up in the Kimberleys. Stopped in for fuel and breakfast then back to work mustering. A lot of the servo's do have a strip Daly waters Pub has one. All along the nullabor there are widened areas for emergency use of the RFDS. Makes a good foto-op for the punters

Lurk R 7th Jul 2002 01:43

Vege - I think the tourists were startled because the lightie was filling up with diesel!!! :D

Chimbu chuckles 7th Jul 2002 03:49

Landed an old C150 on a road in SW QLD many many moons ago to fill up with 'Mogas'...but my stude, who was thinking about buying this particular aircraft, was a local Copper. I think the donuts were free too.:D

I can't help wondering if the rationale, these days, is to avoid parking fees imposed by airport operators...? :D

Captain Gerry 7th Jul 2002 11:29

Cadney Park Homestead on the Stuart Highway in South Australia. Semi trailers and cars and caravans park at the front, aeroplanes at the back between the railway line and the homestead. Fuel in a bowser, great hospitality and excellent food (could show QANTAS a thing or two!). Highly recommend it!

William Creek Hotel still friendly and yes you park out the back or get run over by 4 wheel drives!!!!

Eastwest Loco 7th Jul 2002 12:07

The TAA F27 op inton Birdsville used to overnight there.

17 tonnes of dutch metal was regularly taxiied up to and parked next to the pub.

Them was the days.

Best all.

Does anyone know if you can still park your a/c in a similar fashion at Byrock? Do they still run the lizard races every October long w/end? Some members of my family used to go up there for the races, many a tall tale told over many ales....... :D

Oz, I can't believe you'd think like that...... ;)

Border Village Roadhouse just inside the border of SA is another of those little gems. Had to circle a couple of times to convince myself that the )-shaped thing going off the side of the camping area was actually the strip, and then dodge the emus on landing. Two and a half years in the Homelands of East Arnhemland, and BOV is the dodgiest strip I have ever seen.

There are also sections of the NorthWest Coastal Highway in WA marked out as runways for the RFDS. Almost ran off the road in shock at Nanutarra, first time I'd ever seen one. Great idea!
