Pilots fighting fit!!

Just reading in the weekend paper that the police force want to have gym's co-located with their station as to ensure they are kept fighting fit.

Now, pilots probably sit down the most and do the least amount of exercise except from walking to and from the car and the terminal...

Do you think it would be viable to have gyms located near or in airports, and have it as a requirement that all pilots exercise regularly in order to increase alertness and just for all round physical well-being...!?

Perhaps it could be called... "Flying Fit" :D

Just a thought... not a critisim of ANY pilots or pilots in general, this isn't a wind up just an idea.... any thoughts??

Well, why not. After all, most breweries have a staff bar! :D

airbrake42 12th Jun 2002 05:37

A little off the intended track, BUT, if coppers were out doing there job, walking or riding the beet they would not have turned into the fat boys in blue we see today. What do they need a gym for? Doing their job would keep them in shape, good shape that is.

By all means put one at the airport though.

Towering Q 12th Jun 2002 06:10

Airbrake42...I feel your point of view is a little simplistic. The overwhelming majority of the operational police do not walk a 'beet'. The only dedicated foot patrol sections are normally located at busy inner city police stations where getting around on foot is more practical.

Most operational policing is carried out in the 'burbs where the 'old paddy wagon' becomes a mobile office. The humble van scurries back and forth across its patch attending a never ending list of jobs from burglarys to bashings and domestics to disturbances. All this cannot be accomplished on foot.

Mr Plod then becomes like Mr Pilot. He/she spends a lot of time sitting down in his/her mode of transport. Mr Plod just has to get out more often.

Gym and Bar sounds good

nungry 12th Jun 2002 06:45

As 03ILS said - just a thought - we all have to do medicals at least every twelve months -(six for some), and we all get the question, "so, how much exercise do you do?", sort of in the same catergory as the cigarette question.
But my question is, if keeping fit is part of maintaining a medical, surely a gym membership is part of keeping "Flying Fit"?
You have brought up a good point i think, as where I am, the companies here have a bit more say in what thier pilots do out of hours than back home.
C'mon, we're not talking about coppas here fellas, we're now talking about a legitimate tax break!! Lets get crackn!!!!

Kaptin M 12th Jun 2002 07:12

If the "wallopers" are concerned about staying "Fighting Fit" (and watch out, because we're going to hear from the paciifists soon, I dare say), then wouldn't a martial arts school be more appropriate? A fit copper doesn't necessarily translate into a good exponent of physical defence.

Nungry raises an interesting point with his post about a professional pilot's REQUIREMENT to obtain, and maintain, a certain level of (cardiovascular and pulmonary) fitness, and the legitimacy of money being spent for that as a tax write-off.
Actually the ones who SHOULD do the follow-up on that for us, are the gyms.
Naturally there are other ways of getting fit that wouldn't require the outlay that gym membership does - but it's horses for courses.

BTW, I think the word is beat - beet is the sort of stuff that is associated with a type of root - something most Aussies are familiar with! :D

Suggestions for the bar name - "Flying High"
and for the type of club that could be established for airborne cops who pound the beet - "Flying ?***".

Hmmmmm interesting idea......

Auckland Airport has a gym across from the Air NZ Jet base up at the Aviation Club (golf course, bar and gym)....

Funny enough the gym is called Flying Fit health club  - Not that ive ever been into the gym but the bar serves up cheap brewskies!

Dale Harris 12th Jun 2002 08:48

Hmmmm, Kaptin, anyone in mind?????:D

Why matial arts / 10 mm Glock works better!

Dale Harris 12th Jun 2002 11:38

Desert Duck, I agree the Glock works better, but jesus, you should see the friggen paperwork involved in just unholstering the thing!!!! From experience, take the martial arts option!!!!!

03ILS. You were successfully test flown a month ago, where are you? Why are you not up there and radiating safe minimas to pilots?
Just because some local ASA manager was contemplating his navel a few day's before your commissioning and suddenly discovered that your profile did not provide wake turbulence separation from the JT Zone, (by 200ft at the extreme NE end 7.8 DME PH I think)) you have been neutered. (With many ASA managers local and national running for DEEP cover). Ths despite the fact that your brother, 03VOR/DME, who has been around for some 15 years, has the same profile at that distance.
Forget trivial threads such as your latest posting,, we should all be asking why you haven't been commissioned, particularly given the weather forecast for the next few days. BRING ON THE 03ILS.

Kaptin M 12th Jun 2002 13:06

Yes Dale, as a matter of fact I DID have a particular profile in mind. :D

BTW, Turbine, I think you'll find there is SOME effort required by professional pilots in maintaining their level of fitness.
"Most pilots are weak, overweight and grossly unfit." - but I believe LESS so than the average, sedentary office worker. Personally, I drink ONLY water at work, and try to avoid the fatty, oily foods supplied as crew inflight refreshment - so please don't generalise!

And who censored my "Flying ?***" ??
Actually it was DUCK - but then SOME people were probably thinking of other foul consonants...like L, or B, or...

good day Dale
havent heard from you in ages, still flying the Queen Air and the Baron.
Keep in touch, say hello to the Bearded wonder for me or should I say toy boy.:)

I'm with stupid 13th Jun 2002 07:52

Agree Turbine, maybe not most but probably at least half.
The " fitness " required to pass a CASA medical is a bit of a joke, but I guess you could agrue that not too many A/C crash due to the Pilot being a lazy fat slob ;)

BMI is a tad misleading, skin folds are the way to go ( not as easy to obtain, granted ).
Most people need some form of motovation to hit the gym, and it is quite obvious that looking in the mirror is not enough for some, and unfortunately history tells us that they don't need it to keep their job. ( short term at least )

03ILS, there used to be ( still is ? ) a gym at Perth airport, don't think it was frequented by too many pilots though.

flyby_kiwi 13th Jun 2002 08:37

Because Im still a student I consider myself immune to being overweight, lazy and weak :p

The mentioned comments do interest me as alot of the airline guys I see around the airport seem really really Lankey! (not at all fat). I guess tho those are the two categories you can fall into?

Throtlemonkey 13th Jun 2002 10:54

I dunno about the rest of you but I generally start exercising for around 4 weeks before the medical due date then go back to being a slob for the rest of the year. Does pulling a 910kg aircraft in and out of the hangar 6 days a week on ones own count as enough exercise, after staring at the clocks all day I feel like ive run a marathon and just couldn't be stuffed going to a gym.

I'm with stupid 14th Jun 2002 08:06

as a general rule, TM, you should get around 3 x 30 minute sessions a week that get your heart rate above 115bpm.
This can be in the form of a brisk walk, jog, bike ride or gym session ( or sex :p )
Unfortunatley, being mentally drained at the end of the day does'nt help your body much, infact, stress is a contibutor to being physically unwell if it remains unchecked.

Outdoor gym

We have an on site gym for pilot fitness - it includes washing aircraft, chopping wood, stacking wood, washing windows, running out to the windsock to untangle it, finding the lost golf balls, mowing the apron and bowser area - by hand motor mower, filling potholes, chasing foxes, being chased by plovers, refueling aircraft and then hitting the bar in front of a roaring fire in wintertime! (and we even have our very own fully qualified personal trainer on staff!):p
