Dick Smith on pprune

Just thought people might be interested to see Dick Smith (or someone with remarkably similar ideals and claiming to be him) is responding to questions on this forum about his airspace proposal ie. the one coming to a sky near you!

He's on the "Dick Smith airspace" thread.

Maybe a dull topic, but good to see him there.

Woomera 4th Jun 2002 10:29

Ferris

You can be assured that the Dick Smith you see on the 'Airspace thread' is indeed he.

triadic 4th Jun 2002 10:34

Relax Ferris, it is Dick.

If you had taken some notice of what Woomera said a while back you would have known that.

And the subject is far from "dull" .. it just seems that you are complacent about change, like many others .. If you don't participate then you will never have your opinion tabled !

:D :D

ferris 4th Jun 2002 11:29

Yeah, complacent. That's me. I never have opinions about anything.

karrank 4th Jun 2002 12:56

Ferris would be the least opinionated rottweiller I've met...

Seriously, I agree its good to see Dick on this forum, but his faults do not include lack of "front". I believe he has had some things to say on the AOPA forums also, but most of them are locked up for members only.

Eastwest Loco 4th Jun 2002 13:21

If a person is called into disrepute, or commented on in the least way then he must be allowed to comment/participate.

Keep the input coming Dick - and please put just a little salt in the peanut butter!!!

Nice to see you down here with us plebs anyway.

Best all

It is great to see Dick Smith on here being quite open and approachable as well as contactable, not hiding behind an alias name. :) :)

All I can say is you lot are easily conned or too young to know.
Just go back in history a little and tell me who invented the term
Affordable Air Safety, and who in there term at the head of the regulator reduced it to a point where it could not do the paperwork let alone regulate the industry. Dick Smith should have his memership of the Liberal Party put on hold for the good of the Aviation Industry so it may prosprer.

Dick was certainly the advocate and originator of "affordable safety". He used the term frequently and with great enthusiasm in the early 1990s.

An examination of the Hansard of the Reps Standing Committee on Transport, Communication and Infrastructure dated 28 June 1995 will show that he was quite happy to take ownership of the term then (see page 26) - despite the recent findings of the Monarch and Seaview inquiries which brought about the demise of the CAA.

I think most of us accept that safety comes at a price. But many who were around at that time believe the selling of 'affordable safety' was used as a smokescreen for reckless and dangerous cost-cutting.

EWL,

Didn't you hear, Dick is no longer in the peanut trade, Sanitarium is the new owner of DSF's.

MEDIA RELEASE 28 MAY 2002
DICK SMITH FOODS TO EXPAND
Dick Smith Foods Joins Forces with New Sanitarium Health Foods Subsidiary

With the aim of expanding his already successful food brand, Dick Smith has granted a long term
Licence to a newly established subsidiary of the Sanitarium Health Food Company, to manage the
operations of Dick Smith Foods.

From 1 July 2002 the new company, trading as “Dick Smith Foods”, will co-ordinate and manage
the marketing, distribution, product development and quality control of this prominent Australian
brand and products. The company philosophy established by Dick Smith, which supports
Australian owned businesses and Aussie farmers, will continue.

....and so on...

I for one think how Mr Smith makes his money is not important to the airspace debate, however I post this for info.

Pioneer Pilot 8th Jun 2002 04:21

I wonder?

Does this now mean that Dick Smith Foods is now a non tax paying subsiduary of Sanitarium, which as a company owned by a Church is exempt from paying taxes?
If so, so much for Dick looking after Australia, more like looking after himself!

Spatial Disorientation 8th Jun 2002 04:30

All I can say, is get over yourselves! If Australians (which I am one) spent less time bitching and whining about issues and more time working towards solving them, our industry might actually make some head way.

I realise it is an Australian thing to do your best to muddy the waters with anything, but it is amazing how anything positive can end up negative.

If only we could all make CONSTRUCTIVE criticism here and work towards making aviation a better place. I for one have left the industry and will only fly privately for the simple reason, it just isn't fun anymore. After flying around the world, Australia has to be one of those places, it is not fun anymore. We are all making it too political!!!

OzExpat 8th Jun 2002 08:48

My opionion of Dick Smith, as expressed in this forum over the last couple of years is a matter of record. But I can't get upset as to whether or not he's worked a tax "swifty" with DSF or not. The fact is that the tax laws allow it to happen, which makes it legal for everyone that wants to make use of it.

Spatial

WELL SAID!!!

I spent some time talking to a few charter operators over the last few days. All they did was bitch about each other. This guy gets a CASA dispensation, that guy sells tickets for charter, their Cessna isn't airworthy etc.

I know LAMEs who put in CAIR reports to stuff up other LAMEs. I know pilots conned into putting in MDRs on LAMEs just cos the nice? man from CASA asked them to. We aint got enough LAMEs, but still we attack them!!!!

The proplem is CASA. But CASA sit back fat dumb and happy watching us tear each other apart instead of stopping them stuffing up GA in Oz.

I really wish there was a way to get GA, Charter, small RPT, training etc to work together to rid us of the Conspiracy Against Safe Aviation.

:(

Outback Pilot 24th Jun 2002 21:47

Well Put Spatial Disorientation

They call it the Australian tall poppy syndrome.

:D

awetzel 25th Jun 2002 07:20

I admire Dick Smiths Optimism.

It reminds me of a couple of sayings I once heard;

1. "Optimism is essential to achievement and it is also the foundation of courage and true progress"

2. "You have to do what others won't, To achieve what others don't."
You're at least having a go and not a fence sitter like so many others in the industry.

:)
