Broken Hill Nomad

The Broken Hill RFDS Base has a Nomad on a pole. The aeroplane is marked as VH-MSF but I believe that is not its true identity. Does anyone know which one it is?

If my memory serves me correct, it was one of the two Nomads that used to operate ex SYD to Newcastle (in the late '70's??). One or both of them were decommissioned at SYD and gathered dust and salt there for some time. VH-RCC rings a bell???... or was it RRC???
It was transported to BHI around 90/91 I think.

I have a note that N22B VH-RCC (c/n 33) was withdrawn from service at Broken Hill so I reckon that might be it. Many thanks.

The other Nomad that operated the Maitland -Sydney service from my memory was VH-BFH which I think is in the museum at Caloundra.
I am sure some of our Caloundra Based scribes will correct me if I am wrong.

You are spot on. VH-BFH is in the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra. As V-P of QAM I can state this with some authority! We are still looking for many parts, particularly u/c, engines, cowls and props. Timex/damaged parts are perfectly acceptable.

I was told it was RCC.. A funny story is that approx two years ago I was at the local tip on the Gold Coast and purchased The Flight manual of RCC s/n33 plus a few WAC's for $2.. I couldn't believe it!!! It had a few BP & Shell expired Carnets in the name of Pel-Air in Sydney.

Anyway after acquiring the flight manual I became quite interested on the whereabouts and was told by PG at Seair (who operates the original VH-MSF) that it was sitting all sad at broken hill and that he had in the past taken a few bits off it for the real MSF..

Another interesting website has all the serial numbers and rego's of ex Aussie Nomads is;
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaver...7774/nomad.htm

But i guess if you really want to make sure which aircraft it is the serial # is in the nose locker on the left hand side.

Cheers :D :D :D

Fris B,
Contact Mills Rolfe Aircraft maintinance at Moorabbin Airport. They are fixing VH-ATO following a wheels up at Pakenham. You never know what they might have left over.
Mills Rolfe Aviation, Hangar8, Third Street, Moorabbin Airport. Phone 03-9587-4757. Hope this is of some help. I always flew with Henebery Aviation to Caloundra. Spoke with Kev the other day.

The two aircraft on the Syd- Mnd run were RCC and WRT. The company was Clubair which was bought out by a company called Wings Australia , which from memory lasted about 6 months. Wings also bought out Masling and was somehow affiliated with Jet Charter Airlines which I think morphed into Pel-Air
I nursed these two aircraft along for about 500 hrs then left for greener pastures. ;)

Fris B.

The RFDS in Broken Hill had 2 Nomad a/c in the late 80's early 90's. They were VH-MSE which was subsquently sold to a Asian counrty up North I believe, and VH-MSF, sold to an Aussie. The replica on the pole in BH came in a box in pieces and was painted up in the original Nomad colours.

Great a/c if you were not in a hurry!

Essbee, Didn't Club Air end up with 3 Nomads. I can recall that their was a problem with Nose or Main Wheel Cracking at the time and they put this down to taxi speeds over a long distances at KSA. In order for Club Air to be able to provide their scheduled service H.C.Sleigh/Forrest Air in Melb I thought sent up the additional Nomad for Club Air to use. This was done whilst they sorted out the problem with the wheel manufacturer, who I won't name here. ;)
