BYE BYE VIRGIN BLUE! HELLO ANSETT

Glad to hear that Ansett finally has some serious backing from OS. This has got the Virgin Blue camp seriously rattled as they approached the pair first and were knocked back. It is obvious that only one will survive to compete with Qantas and the smart money would now have to be on Ansett. VB desperately need terminals to keep expanding and Godfrey's seen that dream evaporate in the last 2 days. I will be glad when Virgin are gone as Branson has eroded wages and air safety in this country by starting the price war he said wouldn't happen as "VB were only after the niche market market." Be gone and stay out!

I think you maybe under estimating the
Australian travelling public, they may
just realise that if your prediction comes
true, they will very quickly be back to
$400 SYD-MEL etc, so I presume you think
they will not mind.

Not bad for a first post... :( your second is even more devisive........ :(

Map of Tasmania 19th Dec 2001 09:25

The travelling public have been burnt too many times with Ansett. If you were travelling this Christmas holidays, would you buy a ticket with Ansett? BTW how dare Ansett put up those rediculous signs on the road behind the threshold of 16R. I have been recommending all of my friends and family to use either Qantas or Virgin, and I know many others who have done the same!

Alpha41 19th Dec 2001 09:37

MOT. Ansett didn't burn anyone. You seem to forget that it was Air New Zealand who ultimately wrang the last drop out of a once proud airline then ran back to Wellington and blamed everyone else including the Australian tax payers! Ansett will re emerge and put VB where it belongs, on the scrap heap.

Sorry, I thought you were writing about Impact. You think conditions are bad at VB. Take a peek at what the 1900 drivers accept for pay.

Interceptor 19th Dec 2001 09:57

Alpha41,

Don't count your chickens just yet as the dust is far from settled. Ansett is rightly descibed as a "Carcass" and it will take a hell of lot more than what you think to resurrect and make it viable. Whilst terminals might be an issue for VB, it will not be an insurmountable problem considering the current political climate and VB's determination to succeed.

radnav 19th Dec 2001 10:39

If your stupid enough to work for such abysmal wages and conditions then you only have yourself to blame.
Impulse, Virgin Blue and of course what seems to be the pilots "wetdream of the moment", Australian Airlines, are taking advantage of this brainwashed "pilots are worthless liabilities" mindset thereby exploiting pilots naive and short-sighted ambitions.
And just what are the AIPA and AFAP doing to prevent this? Nothing! In fact their aiding and abetting!
People let themselves get exploited.
Either do something about it now or don't winge in the future about what YOU signed on for!

Sly'n Smiley 19th Dec 2001 10:50

Exactly Radnav, I haven't heard of any examples of people signing employment contracts with a gun held to their head.

eisle s 19th Dec 2001 10:56

Also radnav, I dont hear the pilots at VB and Impulse complaining about their wages. Youre right noone held a gun to their heads and I dont hear them complaining, only guys like yourself who fear their own little world might undergo some changes.
Grow up and leave them be.

Flat Side Up 19th Dec 2001 10:57

Alpha 41,

Did it ever occur to you that you are wishing former AN pilots; possibly friends of yours; who joined VB, out of a job. Likewise VB (putting aside the '89ers) pilots who wish AN or QF ill are in the same category. Most pilots have friends in all airlines. Why then do they wish the worst for friends?

You may not like the management/owners of such airlines and their contract terms/pay may be different from what you desire but even you may have to settle for something less than that.

So live and let live.

eisle,
SOME of the folks at Virgin Blue and Impulse may not be complaining but there are many working at these airlines who have built up large saving funds from working offshore or elsewhere.
These people should know better and would have been in a position to influence the future direction of professional aviation in Australia.
Instead for their own short-term, selfish agendas they and the AFAP sold out pilots in Australia.
Managements are now happily exploiting this situation as pilots gullibly fight against each other and convince themselves that the only way from here is down.
Well Done.

Let me guess Alpha you probably have been whining about VB being an off shore company as well. Well mate so who do you work for?? QF - BA or is it AN - ANZ/SQ and now with America West flavour, god help us, if you have flown AW you might just be worried, how many chpt 11's is that now. Get over VB and have a look in your pantry, do you buy Australian or do you drive a Japanese import (come to think about it GMH and Ford are not from oz are they), eating Kraft products and laying in your Italian marble spa wondering how to buy more imported crap. Being from Sydney you probably wear imported jumpers made from non-Australian wool producers whilst people like my old man raise and shear 12000 sheep a year just to afford air fares for his kids to see the beach once a year. No mate you just keep gobbing off and I look forward to the day I can actually fly home to regional Australia for less money than it costs to fly to London.

How safety has been eroded by VB is beyond me, new aircraft, crusty old grey haired guru’s who can actually teach by worldly experience rather than being the product of a system made necessary by people with lack of moral fibre. Add in the fact that most of the FO’s have good regional experience I just don’t get your point. Or is it you are not good enough to survive out in the real world.
As for the pay issue well we all would like more however some of us are happy with our pay scale and maybe we need to think globally rather than as insular poppies.
Don’t forget to buy that jumper made with Aussie wool Dad needs to pay us all.

Standup and what ever the rest of your name is today.

Settle down dear chap.

If the content of your last post is anything to go by, you're obviously very excited and much too disturbed to contribute anything that approaches rational argument .

You are the weakest link - goodbye.

:D

airag 19th Dec 2001 15:50

Excellent point Wirraway and beautifully put Standup', nice to see some support for
Virgin in an often hostile environment.

Qduck 19th Dec 2001 15:52

QF, AN, and Virgin drivers:

It is time for a BIG reality check.

I was a Captain earning what I considered to be reasonable money for the job I was doing, RPT, jet.

I have been made redundant twice in the past six months.

I have not had ONE AN, QF or Virgin aircrew offer me condolences, offer to help or get the Federation on my/our side.

If you people are to be believed we should all stick together and fly the flag for our RIGHTFUL conditions. $150,000.00 to $ 400,000.00, plus as far as I can figure.

Let me tell you gentlemen, I have been doing the most menial and degrading of jobs, for $13.00/hr to keep food on the table, to give my graduating son the schoolies week he so richly deserved, to provide Christmas pressies for the young ones.

Your attitude sickens me.

I think your gravy train is about to go into the tunnel and will not come out the other end.

I will fly an RPT jet for $90,000.00 p/a., and I can. Be it 73,74,76 etc. It beats the hell out of what I have had to do just to survive.

Get your hand off it people!!

F111 19th Dec 2001 15:58

Doctor,
Impulse B1900 Capts are on $57000 base, FO's $35000. Go read the award, you may get a surpise. There are many regional airlines in OZ paying less than Impulse.

Qduck 19th Dec 2001 16:12

Forgot to mention Gents,

I can go all the way down to $38,000.00/pa and still be ahead of where I am now!!!

No I am not a scab, just unemployed with a skill to sell.

gjharris1 19th Dec 2001 16:20

Sorry to hear of your predicament Qduck.

All the best to you for Christmas and the New Year! ;)

As for Alpha41, you obviously enjoy seeing people put out of work! Having VB go out of business will only cause more heartache for more aviation families.

Why cant people who use this forum get over the childish 'my airline is better than yours' mentality and WORK TOGETHER for a better industry and cameraderie???

Merry Christmas to all.

Yes, we should indeed be following this advice, but when someone starts these types of posts, the reality is that an equivalent and often more emotive response is delivered. The spiral into largely irrelevant stuff continues unabated.

This particular topic was started I guess as the result of the latest developments at AN and the possible ramifications at DJ.

Once the topic is eventually closed, count how many responses actually contributed legitimately to a reaoned argument for or against.

But this is PPRuNe and its very nature invites very differing and unusual comments.

So I think wer'e stuck with it and have to accept it the way it is mean't to be ie. a rumour network.

I like it the way it is.
