Maths in aviation
 

Hi!. .i was just wanting to know how important maths is in aviation. Im not very good at mathematics but am good in all other subjects including Ancient history,senior science,english,and geography. Does this mean i can not become an airline pilot? I do understand flying and am learning at the moment but should i give up on my dream? QF do not except general maths so would it be possible to do an aviation mathematics course which will be equal to advanced maths?. .thanks

If you can multiply by 1.76, divide by 2.204, divide by 3 and convert UTC to LST then you're home and hosed. It's all basic math that you will use day-to-day.

Some people might have you believe it's rocket science Oz Flyboy, but it ain't.

Jarse, I've learnt something there, all these years I've been dividing by 2.205. Thanks for that.. .As an aside, I hear that on these latest two the breakers are going to pulled and we'll go back to zig zaging and trying to find Singo on a stormy afternoon by DR.

At school I was abysmal at math, my Maths Calculas teacher was less than complimentry.

Maths in Aviation has never posed a problem, I think it is a combination of being genuinely interested in what you are working out and the fact that it it is not just theoretical. It has a definite, tangible quality which when you think it through makes sense.

The subjects you are taking make for interesting conversation in the cockpit, which is also important. You get a little tired of discussing principles of flight sometimes.

I only have year 10 maths and that was 26 years ago. Nothing so far in my studies has had me stumped. Although I can only speak with experience up to CPL and MECIR. ATPL would probably be a different matter.

Wal-der-Dash is spot on. If you are truly interested in what you are studying. It comes a lot easier.

Qantas DOES except general Maths - it will only Accept the subject that was called (back in my day) 2u Related, or better.

Of course, since you are doing 3u English you knew that. :)

I think that despite the truth of IJ's post (no, there is no difficult maths involved), Qantas are looking for people who are inclined to challenge themselves rather than take the easiest road, which basic High School maths courses certainly are.

You divide by and multiply by whatever numbers get more fuel in your tanks :)

Fact 1: You don't need advanced maths to fly an aeroplane.. .Fact 2: Yo DO need it to fly for QANTAS.. .Therefore: If you wish to fly a 172 don't bother with advanced maths, but if you wish to fly a 747 hit the books!. .Fact 3: Many QANTAS pilots did a bridging course partime years after leaving school.. .Your call!. . <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

There was somewhere in Perth that does the required maths/physics course.

Several ex AN pilots went over there recently (last 6 weeks) to get the qual. to join QF.

Maybe others can give the exact details of the course. I think it's about a week long and is very intensive.

Does anyone know which of the Western Australian maths subjects would be acceptable to Qantas. Windshear has a son going into Year 11 next year, and he wants to know which of Introductory Calculus, Discrete or Applicable Maths he should be taking.

The idea of the course, from the airlines point of view, I believe is to see if you are intelligent enough to absorb information in a given time span as the airline jet endorsement course involves absorbing a lot of information in a short time.
