Angel Vale: John Spiers, Aviation Journo.

Friends,

John Spiers was an Australian aviation journalist with a career spanning nearly 40 years. In that time he has been the editor of major international publications, Australian correspondent for several more, Aviation Editor of The Australian (in the 1980's), one of the founding contributors to Australian Aviation, editor of Flying magazine and editor (most recently) of AOPA magazine.

Unlike many aviation journalists, Spiers was a qualified pilot with a truly deep knowledge of the industry.

Through his career his writing was marked by his passion for flying and a real sense of 'real' journalism; a professional reporter of facts. He was a kind man with lots of encouragement and wise advice for those of us who aspired to make a career out of journalism, aviation, or both.

John lost his battle with cancer over the weekend.

His funeral service will be held on Monday 21st December at 10.30 a.m at St David's Church, Dalhousie Street, Haberfield.

John was a kind and loyal man and a nice contrast to the real world. It was my pleasure to have known him.

Hello All,

Sad news, he was a good person.
He never left you wondering where you stood, a 'strait shooter'.

With respect and memories.
