'POP UP' messages in XP

Having spent the weekend installing XP Pro, I now find that virtually every time I go on line I get annoying popup messages, rather like AIM IM boxes.
One in particular really pi$$e$ me off, it tells me to 'Go Here' to download software to stop it.....
It is getting right up my nasal passages, how the fcuk do I stop it?
