Adding memory to Apple iMac ?

Hi folks. The memory on our iMac is getting full and this is affecting its performance.
I have a USB 1T memory pack, an SSD I think. Could I leave this plugged in to the iMac and transfer all my photos and other stuff onto it ?

I have iCloud but would prefer to use local storage.

Any pros or cons ?

Yes, I have multiple external SSDs attached to my imac mini for that purpose.
You can have your music and photo libraries also on the external drives.
No cons from my point of view (others may differ!).
