W7 Updates
 

I got my Sony Vaio right up to date on the last day. I didn't expect any more updates. I've had at least three, the usual shut-downs and restarts follow. Seems so normal, except that I get a warning on start-up that Windows 7 is no longer supported.

A while back I put an SSD drive in this i7 and it was very good. However, I never could get drivers to operate the added buttons. I phoned Sony, who said they'd sold the Vaio name to a group of investors and it wasn't worth them writing the drivers. This was in the UK c 2 years ago. I like some of the functions so elected to downgrade to W7 which has the drivers. Wish I could go back to W10

You need to think about the security implications of running W7 long term over the cost of replacing the SSD drive I think

I wonder. As the number of users declines would hackers continue to attack an old system? It seems that no sooner is a new App, program or OS developed than hackers swoop.

It seems 'new' means vulnerable and 'older' means patched.

Just a thought.

Unfortunately it doesn't really work like that. Hackers will attack any system they can find a way into, they don't care what operating system it is running and new vulnerabilities will be likely to apply to older systems as well as newer ones, the difference is the newer system will be updated to protect against it whereas the older unsupported system wont. The longer a system remains unsupported the more "holes" it will have in it's security.

If your theory were correct then running a Windows 95 system or a Windows XP system could be considered secure - it certainly would not be :=

I am still running W7 and I understand that all support has stopped. However, I still get offered updates. Anyone have an explanation of how this can happen, I am a little wary of the origin of the updates and have not accepted them.

Although I don't see Win10 as any sort of improvement, reality reigns. I've updated 4 computers from Win7 to Win10, all uneventfully and free, the latest last week. The download websites are still functioning fine, and the appearance can be configured easily to look 95% like Win7 did.

If you have Windows update set to receive updates for all Microsoft products (which I think is the default setting) then you will still receive updates for things like Internet Explorer and .NET framework etc. as these are separate from the operating system and are still current products. There will be no updates to the operating system itself.

W7 was good but I prefer w10 - TBH - seems more stable

Just to add to PJD1's comment - if you have MS Security Essntials as your AV protection, that is still updated by Windows Update. Also any edition of MS Office from 2010 upwards will still be updated by Windows Update.

It's a pity, it ran well on 10, except for the lack of drivers. I've confused the issue by mentioning the SSD, it just happens I put that in for the new install of W7. Despite having the Key on the label, I've never been able to get it accepted. I don't use it enough to warrant throwing an i7 away for a new laptop and can't really do without the sound and brightness sub-function on the F keys.

Only recently did I put my last seat of Office 10 on this machine. (Last of 3.)
