Reconnecting using IE6
When I disconnect from Freeserve Anytime dial up to use the phone I can only reconnect to the internet if I reboot the pc. This affects all programs that use the internet, virus software, IE6, Outlook Express and Opera 6 even Popcorn E-mail. Also if I just put the computer to standby or hibernate I can't reconnect without rebooting.
The dial up software connects to freeserve no problem it's just that none of the programs recognise the connection. My PC has Athlon XP2000+, 256MB, and Windows XP, ( around 20 hotfixes and updates seem to be installed ) Zone Alarm is also installed. My old laptop with windows 98se had no problems connecting and disconnecting all day. Has anybody got any ideas whats going on. |
I think you'll find zone alarm is the problem, or at least I had the same problem when using it. You will probably find that you can reconnect without rebooting by making the connection before opening up IE6.
The easiest way to to this (IMHO) is to open the start menu,go to settings, network connections then right click on the connection icon and select create short cut. You will be asked if you want to put it on your desk top, click yes. If you double click on the new icon your connection can be established, then afterwards open up IE as normal. Sorry this doesn't get to the root of the problem but I haven't had time to get to grips with ZA yet. |
Got the same problem using XP Pro and Zona Alarm Pro. Have not seen any definitive fixes on any of the newsgroups or support web sites. I think we may have to wait until an upgrade to ZoneAlarm or IE7.

Thanks Tinker
It works and thats good enough for me. Thanks for the assistance. Interestingly I used Zone Alarm with w98se and it caused no problems so it must be an issue with XP. |

Yesterday I updated to Zone Alarm Pro 3.0.134 All seems to be ok now as regards reconnecting without re-booting. |
Thanks I'lll have to wait until the flexible friend gets a bit more flexible then upgrade it I think.
