Alternative to Photobucket

Can anyone suggest an alternative to photobucket for posting photos. Photobucket appears to be dog pooh these days.

andytug 23rd June 2017 10:41

I've used imgur.com, but depends what you need it for, it's OK for just linking to websites like this one.

Background Noise 23rd June 2017 12:51

If I just want to post a picture, rather than keep an online photo album, I use TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting. I don't know how long the photos remain accessible in practice and it appears to be operated by photobucket - more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TinyPic

If you explore the yellow bar at the top of every page you've all had a storage album here for a couple of years now. Plus instant inline posting at up to 2000 pixels on the longest edge. The inline option gives the higher resolution.

PT, where amongst the items on the yellow bar may one find this option? None appear to specifically reference a photo album. Thanks and apologies if I'm missing something.

Make sure your piccys are JPEG not RAW. A very simple sight with plenty of options.

Old Speckled Aircrew 24th June 2017 07:29

It's under user cp when you log in CB

Many thanks, it's not actually for this forum, but i posted the question here as you guys are always so helpful...as proved again!

Not even that good! They're now expecting people to upgrade to some paid account just to link the occasional photo.

The greed of Photobucket appears to know no limits....

Rob,

I tried this recently, but I seemed to run into some kind of limit. Is this the case?

It's worse than that. Every photo I've posted over the last few years is now replaced with a black-mail image!

Photobucket ransom shakedown

Screenshot that Photobucket replacement image for a class action lawsuit.
Lengthy agreed-to terms undoubtedly let PB stop free hosting. But do they really let them mess up all your third party writings with that lying defamatory image?
Lying, in the sense that for a lot of us it won't be "temporary," because we're not going to pay the ransom.
Lying, in the sense it is showing a dial needle swung past 100%, when my free hosting usage, per their report, is 1%.
Defamatory, because it makes it seem like I ran past some data storage limit when I wasn't even close, and not doing something about it.

Photobucket has always been difficult to use, but am I the only one w/ at least a few photos (left on) there that are part of message forum posts, etc.?
Wow! Seconds after I originally posted this on another forum, PB removed the "temporary" sentence and reduced the image size. (I do have a camera picture of it...which I can share when set up w/ another host.)
note: at current time posters on two forums are indicating some Photobucket photos still link normally. Maybe it depends on user's attitude...or whether he bought enough offers of 50% off for large prints on canvas.
Ransom demand is 399. USD/year

BEagle 1st July 2017 13:45

Has anybody been daft enough to pay the $399 ransom demand?

Sadly, some PPRuNers from earlier times who are now RIP will have had their piccies replaced by the Photo*uckwit greedometer...:(

Strangely enough, Vertical Freedom, possibly the most prolific poster of pictures on this site, hasn't been effected.

It must be because he is based in Nepal; therefore the Photobucket computer defines him as poor, or it is racialist.

While the greed of those professional businesses linking umpteen hundred images stored on photobucket all for free while selling on ebay so raking in the max profit for themselves is OK....
Sad that as usual the minority abusing the "service" have wrecked it for those just linking a few casual images - but then such is normality these days.

On other forums some have also suggested Imgur as a replacement.
Strange to report the T&C's of imgur expressly forbid third partly linking.
So you can hardly say you have not been warned when they do the same.

In short lots of people have had it good for a long time and the real costs of PB hosting images can only be met by force feeding you ads (to be met with ad blockers) - or by someone actually having to pay.
After all if image hosting/storage was so cheap and you can do it for free why don't all the forums self-host images.........

I tried to switch to FlickR but it's nightmare - for an oldie I hasten to add!

Provided the photo/image is on your own computer the easiest way to post them on here is to click on “Go Advanced” at the bottom of the page in the “Quick Reply” box. Then click on the paperclip – to the right of the single white smiley. “Attachments” will appear if you hover over it.

The “Manage Attachments” box appears once you have clicked on it. Click on “Browse”, select your photo from your computer. The file name will appear to the right of the Browse box. Click Upload and the photo will appear in your post as a clickable thumbnail. Example:-

If you use imgur they do have a BBcode 'share' link for your images which would strongly suggest that they expect people to 3rd party link (on forums etc),they also have other 'shares' for social meedja etc.So a total of 4 'share links' on imgur hosted images.

I do not disagree that any of these photohosting sites could end up charging but hopefully the photobouquet 'ransom' fiasco will advise them to approach it very differently.

andytug 6th July 2017 13:24

Also I think you can upload to imgur without having to sign in to an account, which is handy. No guarantee on longevity of pictures but does anywhere really guarantee longevity on the Internet?

Also started using https://postimages.org - that one gives options for longevity.

There seems to be zero reaction after you have created a file list to post. Just post as normal and it seems to work.

My reaction is to go wooooopie! I'll post ten times as much now. But that's probably just what we shouldn't do.

This is a test:
