Plustek 4830 scanner - help!
Have had a Plustek 4830 installed and working OK on a friend's machine for some time. Initially with W95 then upgraded to W98SE. Since then, have changed to a higher spec machine with W98SE installed as a full install. Cannot access the scanner any longer and installing the Action Manager software 'freezes' the whole machine (won't even Ctl-Alt-Del). Have downloaded a set of W98 drivers for the 4830 and these will allow the scanner to be recognised and scan but it then prevents Paint Shop Pro operating with an error message referring to the MFC42.dll not being available. This file is, actually, present in Windows Sys but is not being 'seen'. The same error message appears if I try to access Windows Paint.
Anyone any helpful thoughts, please? |
Yuk! One of those ugly problems almost impossible to fix in an organised way but I suspect that the scanner drivers have overwritten a MS or Adobe file with one of the wrong date or version.
Some old Adobe stuff was very flaky on the IBM PC. It was, after all intended for the Mac. Check the date of that MFC42.DLL in Windows\system. Is it consistent with the rest of the system files? If not it may be worth finding a copy that is. On my 98SE machine nearly all files in that directory (incl MFC42.dll) are dated 23 Apr 99 at 22.22. My MFC42.DLL is version 6.00.8447 (it also claimed to be 6.0.300) and consists of 995,383 bytes. I can e-mail it if you want it but to install it you may have to start up in "Safe Mode" to be able to over-write the existing file. |
Thank you Fobotcso - have returned to post a 'Belay my last pipe' message. Tucked away in a 'safe' place was a slip of paper which foresaw the problem and offered the solution - set the port as SPP and the memory address as 378H. :o Having done that and re-installed PSP (which overwrote some of the drivers), everything is now working as advertised - phew!!
Again, thank you 'F' for the offer and for past help. This is a super forum with a reassuringly knowledgeable set of contributors. You have helped restore my halo :D |
You're welcome. Glad you were able to sort it.
That you had to fiddle with ports and memory addresses is reminiscent of the bad old days. Not exactly PNP! |
