Misbehaving mouse?
 

Distinctly odd rodent behaviour on my main computer - anyone care to advise, please?
Problem is with selection on the net. Most of the time everything works as advertised but about every third, fourth or fifth selection the response is to 'hang'. e.g. I select a topic in Pprune and the activity bar says 'please wait while this site is contacted', the aol logo goes whirling around and the hour-glass is shown but NOTHING happens. If I do nothing, the situation continues. If, however, I re-select the topic, the activity bar says 'done' and all activity ceases, without producing the selected topic. If I re-select further, with a single click, nothing happens. If I re-select and CONTINUE re-selection with multiple clicks, the activity bar visually alternates between 'done' and 'please wait while this site is contacted' for anything up to 50 or 60 clicks and then the loading window appears , either filled or filling with the appropriate percentage value showing in the activity bar. Once this site or topic has loaded the mouse goes back to normal behaviour for another few selections and then the same thing again. Tried changing mouses and reloading drivers (Intellimouse)etc. but no improvement. Have lived with this for ages, so no huge rush for the solution, but anyone got any ideas, please?

Seriously, I've had this problem intermittently but not as badly as you descibe and not at the moment.

I believe it is not the mouse but Internet Explorer. If you are using 6.0 try going back to 5.5.

Try just reinstalling IE and reinstalling the security patches from the MS download centre.

If your mouse behaves properly with applications such as Word, Excel - or even just Windows Explorer - then it's probably OK.

What version of OS and IE are you on?

Thank you fobotcso. That sounds like a distinct possibility. Certainly it works fine with all those apps so you appear to have hit the proverbial. I suppose that it would probably save a lot of head scratching if I assume that anything coming out of Redmond is going to foul up something or other! :mad: I think it's I.E. 6 - the uncertainty stems from using the dreaded AOL. Will check and report. Thanks again. :)

FWIW I'm using AOL (version 7.0a) and IE 6.0 no problems at all, using AOLs default browser or minimising it and using IE 6.

Thank you Southwest and gas path. One of the problems with aol, as I understand it, is that it really only likes I.E. so an alternative browser is possibly not an option.
gas path - I tried aol 7 and then spent three or four days trying to get my machine working again ! :mad: Frankly, I've had problems ever since changing from aol 3...... the principle of aol development seems to be 'if it's working OK, let's add some unnecessary bells and whistles to foul it up' - yes, I know, I should change ISPs but sheer unadulterated laziness and inertia rules. :o . I'm going to stop procrastinating .... tomorrow. :D

I too always thought AOL was a dodgy way to connect to the internet but I spend a lot of time connected through a non BT line.

I can't get broadband and the likes of Freeserve etc are unavailable without a BT line, hence AOL monthly subscription at £15.99 is about the best option available. Sure its a pain in the ass when you prefer to use Outlook but apart from that its fine.

I use AOL 7 with Win ME without problems.
