WiFi network visible to iPhone not visible to laptop

Visiting a friend and can find and log on to his wi-fi without a problem with my iPhone but the network does not show up when I look for it with my Windows 8.1 laptop.
Anyone have any ideas on why?

Radix. Struggling to use my iPhone to do this. Can you expand on your reply? The friend's setup is 100% Apple. Set up on an iPad or MacAir if that helps. Is there some way I can change the settings in my Winsows laptop to recognise 5ghz networks?
