ISP for the UK - suggestions?
I am coming back to the UK in July after fifteen years in Belgium. I'm currently using a Belgian ISP - Skynet which is fine. I will now have to swap to a UK provider for convenience if for nothing else. Could I ask you chaps and chapesses for your considered opinion on a suitable ISP as I will be using it in future for business emails as well as possible web site hosting. I guess that I'll have to use ISDN as I doubt whether ADSL will be available where I'm going. I guess that you get what you pay for, but your experiences would save me a lot of thought processes.
Cheers and thanks:) |
I've been with BT Internet for some years now, and recently connected to ADSL. I did have initial problems with the line (at the limit of distance - limit is about 5.5Km line distance from the exchange) and my computer (interaction between KT133 chipset on the VIA motherboard). However, the BT engineers have been brilliant in getting the problem solved. Now using ADSL daily (connected for v. long periods without problems) and no complaints. Upload speed about 280Kbs, download 576Kbs.
Pre-ADSL was with BT Anytime (£16 per month and no call charges for H24 connection). The only drawback is that it automatically breaks the connection after 2 hours. That's to stop people staying connected H24. However, you can re-connect immediately with no problem. Difficulty only arises if you are trying to download software where the time to download is more than 2 hours. On balance, I would go for BT Openworld, but if you wish to e-mail me and tell me where you are going, I may be able to find out some more info for you - I have a friendly BT engineer contact. |
Pipex ADSL is cool. They also have a dial up connection. Not sure about ISDN but have a look at Pipex.net.
I have had no problems with them (apart from the BT line hardware faults which would effect any phone line connection). |
Thanks very much, I have had problems getting on to the net today so this is a late reply. FJJP, thanks for your thoughts, I have tried email but I think the server dropped the message so I'll try again tomorrow. Stick flying yes your suggestion would appear good as I've heard of Pipex.
All the best |
Hi. I have BT broadband ADSL installed and its ok. One minor problem on the second day but everything is fine now. Don't go for dial up if you can help it. Choose a broadband option, you will love the speed of it.
