Pprune posts. Lost capability to highlight

Without warning, my computer won't let me put a smile (from Pprune selections) where I want to place it. And I have also lost the capability of highlighting a posters post (where highlighting means enclosing in a blue frame) Also lost capability of using brackets where I wish to use italics, bold or underline, when composing a post to Pprune. Any ideas welcome and appreciated

Testing.

What browser are you using? Do you still see the options in the reply pane of the website, are they greyed out, or are they totally absent?

Loose rivets 12th December 2013 07:51

testing also, since my FFox has undergone a change in the last few days. (I can't reliably use the back arrow.)

Highlighting seems to work.
As does bold.

Newforest2 12th December 2013 12:27

AOL has been giving me trouble over the past couple of weeks in posting, smilies etc. may be a change in their near future!

BOAC 12th December 2013 13:56

User CP/Edit Options/Message Editor check you don't have 'Basic' selected.

Ancient Observer 12th December 2013 16:58

Blimey. If Loose can do it, and I can do it, it must be something in your set up.

Tarq57 12th December 2013 17:49

In my initial reply, I included the source of the quote, thus

Is there a reason for that, Mods? Would you rather we didn't do it?

Certainly makes longer threads a bit easier to follow/track.

Like this?

A decision was made many moons ago, when the PPRuNe server came out of a Christmas cracker, that too many people were hitting Reply and filling threads with a huge amount of unnecessary verbiage, that setting Reply NOT to automatically include the entirety of the post being responded to would be A Good Thing.

PPRuNe seems to have coped remarkably well without the functionality, although telling people how to "quote" is a bit of a bore.

Possibly the decision could be reviewed, now that IB are running the show - and paying the 'leccy bill. Why not drop Admin a line and see if it gets included the New Year Resolutions?

.... and the answer will be no.

We like it clumsy and unwieldy. It saves banning those who are besotted with quoting posts 3 centimeters above along with line by line rebuttals.

So, did you manually remove the title?[edit] just want to know for info/self sanity/memory check, and to save doing it again if it's always going to be removed.

parabellum 13th December 2013 00:29

I have the same problem, has your computer upgraded to to IE11 by any chance? Mine did and I think that is what is to blame. To overcome:

Smilies can be dragged and droppedhttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/smile.gif

To show a quote highlighted in blue: Copy and paste the relevant part:

.... and the answer will be no. then put [ quote ] at the front and [ /quote ] at the back but without any spaces and voila!!!

Tarq, your post was untouched by human hand.

Or by me.

Have you got NoScript or some such running that's blocking ibserv.net?

SD

Tarq57 14th December 2013 02:03

I have NoScript, and AdblockPlus, on Firefox.
But that's not it.
Thing is, I'm pretty sure (like, around 85%) that I had included the OP's name in the quote. Since the only way I can work out how to do this, is manually, it makes the procedure slightly more memorable than just hitting "quote/reply" - or variations thereof used by other forum software.

But it could be a bit of creeping forgetfulness, I guess.

CharlieOneSix 14th December 2013 13:45

Tarq57 - to quote with name: click the reply button in the person's post. In the address bar delete the number 1 from '....&noquote=1' at the end of the address then click return. This will put the person's whole post in your 'reply to thread' box and then you can edit out the parts of the post you don't need, ending up with something similar to this when you Preview Post :

Click on the arrowhead to go back to the quoted post in the thread.

Yeah, that works too.
What's an arrowhead?

CharlieOneSix 14th December 2013 22:54

I'm sure there's a better name for it but I mean the http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...s/viewpost.gif to the right of the quoted poster's name.

Tarq57 14th December 2013 23:24

OK, thanks. I see that beside some quoted posts, but not all.
Never thought to click it before.

BOAC 15th December 2013 07:52

You will only see it where the URL edit has been used to 'quote', I believe. If the 'standard' icon above the editor box is used it does not appear.

My first Christmas present, thank you Parabellum.

BOAC 17th December 2013 07:52

Shack - why not just use the quote icon above the editor box?

parabellum 20th December 2013 09:34

Same reason as me BOAC, it doesn't bloody work anymore! http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/smile.gif Smilies have to be dragged and dropped, [ quote] [ /quote ] has to be inserted manually.

Could be an IE11 problem, it snuck up on me and installed itself as I had automatic update enabled.

  • Sorry, just trying to include as many functions / smilies as possible

Pelikal 20th December 2013 18:24

Hmmm....nothing works for me here either, IE11 newly installed, no messing with add-ons and other stuff. FF is fine.

jimtherev 20th December 2013 20:41

the smilies thing comes and goes for me. FbW's worked; all of them. But Para's and Shack's just didn't work.
Let's see if quoting works:

does it?
yes it does.

Edited (second time, actually) to say that the little info line 'edited by...' didn't come up.

- aha! I must have missed that bit of info on the thread - cannot see it anywhere! I gave up with IE a few years back apart from the odd prehistoric sites that require its use.

BUT I went back to it (IE11/Win7) and lo and behold I see that too. HOWEVER if anyone from IB is reading, the quote icon function DOES work of you select the code page on the editor (a/A top right) and the quote tags do appear (as do all the smilies). If you then post the relevant text between the tags/with the smilies and then return to normal ed mode it looks ok.

I suspect a VB code error - Saab?

:eek::ouch::cool:

I'm logged in using gargle chrome to see if these functions work here.

Yes they do:ok:

Pelikal 21st December 2013 12:00

Definitely a mess-up somewhere using IE 11.

Agreed, I've just uninstalled IE11, back on IE10 and the problem has gone away I think. Let's see what happens when I hit submit:confused:;):ok:

Bingo

:}:):bored::ok::(:*:=:O:E:sad::D:yuk::zzz:;):oh:

Well I've just installed IE 11 to check, and I've got no problem quoting or using smilies. I'm using Win 7 Pro, btw.

I suspect a VB code error
Since there's at least 2 people for whom IE11 works just fine, it's probably more likely to do with add-ins or other configuration at the PC-end.

BOAC 21st December 2013 21:51

My IE11 is 'raw' with no toolbars, extensions or add-ons bar Google as default search (which I do not seem able to remove!!).
