Network, LapTop to Desk Top?

I have a modern Dell laptop and desktop, the desk top is fitted with a 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller which is 3C905C-TX compatible and the laptop has an Actiontec 82559 based mini PCI Ethernet adapter (10/100) as well as a Dial-Up-Adapter and an NDIS 1394 Net Adapter

I would like to combine these two on a network, the laptop has ME as its OS and the desktop has XP Pro.

Would the appropriate cable between the two do the trick or do I require more hard and/or soft ware please?

Despite having good computers I don't actually know a whole lot about them! :o
